[h=1]Apple teases Eyes Free, Siri car integration[/h]By Zach Honig [IMG] posted Jun 11th 2012 2:22PM

Apple's VP of iOS Software Scott Forstall just demoed Eyes Free, Siri's new vehicle integration. The feature is being framed as a safety booster, letting you tap a steering wheel-mounted button to toggle Siri on your iOS device, rather than reaching around for your iPhone or iPad and taking precious seconds away from the road. This being Apple, there are already plenty of partners lined up -- BMW, GM, Mercedes, Land Rover, Jaguar, Audi, Toyota, Chrysler and Honda are all said to be on board, with Siri support making its way to vehicles within the next 12 months. It's certainly not the first example ofsmartphone/car integration we've seen, but it could soon end up being one of the most widely utilized, despite the years-long head-start competing technologies have enjoyed.

So they want to support using Siri in the car but still refuse to support rSAP for proper integration with the high-end phone preps that are becoming more prevalent.

Epic fail Apple, not impressed at all.

This might be a stupid question but I assume it will only be for new models with this feature built into the car or will the 'Siri integration' work for existing set-ups like RNS-e with OEM bluetooth?

Siri can barely understand a word I say when I'm in an exceptionally quiet room, she won't have a hope in hell of hearing me over the milltek\maxogen combo.

what does rSAP do that we dont currently have? On my iphone in the car i can get all my contacts and recently dialled numbers show up on the Pioneer screen.

Also i dont think the RNSE will get this upgrade... to be honest it will need a button on the wheel that can be programmed to use with siri... the newer cars are coming out with programmable buttons and the tech in the new Audi's match that. the older cars will not get that luxury with the standard equipment so looks like more and more people will be going aftermarket to get better functionality out of their cars

It's beyond pathetic. rSAP is an established system which more and more car manufacturers are implementing and yet Apple, in their typical "we know best" bloody-mindedness refuse to play ball and instead prefer to try to get the car manufacturers to support gimmicks like using Siri in the car.

I can already use Siri in my car! Ok I have to press the home button on the phone to trigger it, rather than the steering wheel but, once done, I can use it through the existing bluetooth prep without any problems.

Apple - love their products, despise the company and the arrogant way they go about things.

Full data connectivity for Internet access to download Google Maps images or points of interest for navigation or provide a Wifi hotspot within the car for others to use from their devices. Can also display text messages and the like.

Basically the car has a phone built in and just connects directly to the SIM in your phone, as if you'd physically removed it and plugged it into the car. The car can also use its own roof aerial for better reception and can put your phone into a very low-power state, just enough to maintain the SIM card reader and bluetooth circuitry, reducing battery consumption to a fraction of normal.

From Audi's brochure for the A1:

None of that is possible with an iPhone. Pathetic.

Siri already works via the cars BT system, used it various times with clients cars on the 8P0/1 range of BT units, works well, seems to thnk its a call so sends the voice to the handset & responds appropriately.

iphone has maps, street view and navigation (iOS6). you can see info about weather and other POIs.
the new maps will have traffic info and real time traffic situations.... they have teamed up with tomtom to make that app.
iphone has been able to create a wifi hotspot for a while now... its called personal hotspot.

i admit the sound of the rSAP is good and i wouldnt mind if the car was to stop my iphone battery from draining so fast but we all know that apple always tries to do things their own way and invent new things.
