    Hi all...

A while back I posted about a loss of satellite signal on my RNSe Sat Nav plus system in my A6 C5 avant. The AM reception has been missing for a good while, but I'm starting to miss it now and I think the two issues may be connected.

The gps connection came back (so I attributed the loss to the solar flare, no less...) and worked for a few months without any problem, but it has now failed again.

I took the car into an Audi specialist today and they ran a VGC scan on the system. They found no errors with the GPS or the radio antenna.

But, the unit was struggling to pinpoint me, alternating between 0 and 3 satellites on my way home from work. Normally, it finds 8 or 9 satellites and has no problem. It's currently sitting at 0 satellites outside my house, with my position about a half mile off.

I was doing a search online and found something about an antenna booster, mounted in the tailgate. I think the part number is 4B9035225B, but I'm not certain.

If this were faulty, would this cause the problems I'm experiencing?

If not, does anyone have any other ideas?

The antenna is also in pretty bad shape - the rubber is all perished at the base and I don't know if the wire itself is still in good condition. The garage did open up the panel under the antenna, where the boot light is located, and they found it bone dry with no visible issues.

Any help would be much appreciated as I miss my satnav terribly...

    Thanks!

    A.

You could try adding the smaller square gps antenna, see if this helps with the signal, if so then it would indicate the antenna system has a fault somewhere, I think there's an antenna amp in the boot lid somewhere, but I wonder if its the roof antenna as the wiring schematics seems to indicate R52 as the roof aerial for radio, telephone & navigation.

With the A6 Avant the roof antenna is GPS/GSM/FM/AM according to ELSAwin, The exact would depend on what options your car has. It can be FM/AM (simplex) or FM/AM/GSM & FM/AM/GPS (Duplex) or FM/AM/GPS/GSM (triplex).

Usually the base fails which is the antenna amp and the GPS, maybe you should swap that.

    Thanks S8Craig

Mine has the RNSe sat nav but no phone preparation. Would that make it FM/AM/GPS?

Does ELSAwin say where the components are installed?

Also, is anyone able to explain why the GPS needs a specific bee-sting aerial? I would have thought these would be separate?

    Thanks!

    Update:

I've bought a fakra GPS antenna off e-bay and the RNS-e removal keys (set of 4). I've also had a look at some pictures and videos on youtube to see how to demount the glove compartment, behind which I gather is a good place to mount the magnetic antenna.

Obviously, if the satnav starts to work with the new antenna, I know it's the factory installed antenna (or one of the boosters) that;s faulty.

Having said that, I'd still like to try getting the AM reception back, which this obviously won't address.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks,

    A.

Just completed installation of the new GPS antenna.

I demounted the glove box and attached the magnetic antenna on a piece of the dashboard frame. I'm getting 5-6 satellites now, and it's been able to pinpoint my position no problem.

    Really pleased with the result.

Now I just need to sort out the intermittent loss of sound from the rear speakers...

Is it essential to mount the antenna on the passenger side behind the glovebox, or can it be located on the driver's side, under the steering column?

Passenger side next to the vents as its closest to glass then, never failed me.

I just need to get some sort of signal back, so I can sell the car with the satnav functioning. Minimum fix for minimal effort and expense.

New satnav antenna arrived today. Plugged it in, immediately hit six satellites. Removed glovebox, routed the antenna round behind, located it as directed by the end of the dash, refitted the glovebox, slotted head unit back into place. Rechecked number of satellites, down to two. :(
