How big are the holes you've drilled and where abouts on the airbox did you drill them? (obviously under the filter but where abouts)

Mine were quite small, used a standard drillbit... I drilled litterally on the front of the airbox - so the intake pipe from the wheel arch is on the right as you look at it....on the lower section so before the filter.... Prob about 20 holes... Then about another 20 on the bottom of it below the filter... Obv the bigger holes you make the more noise I'd imagine. Mines not amazingly loud, just louder then it was with a bit more re-circ noise.

Whatever you do obv take the whole airbox out when you do it don't even think about doing it fitted - plus your gonna get plastic everywhere which needs to be removed. It's only 2 bolts to remove

My airbox is off at the minute anyway due to a cone filter. I'm going to smooth mine for sure and stick a green cotton filter in there before going to town on it with the drill I think.

The cone filter sounds the balls but I'm sure its not as quick with it on. Seems slower to pick up.

I'll try to get some pics over the weekend. I would have got them at the time but the work was done by a friend while it was being repaired at his garage. A3Tom, I believe the holes on mine are on the right-hand (when viewed from the front) side of the airbox and underneath. This keeps the warm air pulled through to a minimum as the right-hand side is where the intake points anyway, and by drilling underneath you can take advantage of the air flowing above the gearbox.

As Fran said, the noise isn't offensive or silly, just lets you hear the turbo spooling and you get a lot more re-circ noise. In fact trying to get the car to produce different sounds is quite addictive. You also get a much more prominent growl under load. If I can I'll try to get some clips up over the weekend too. I have some of the car before the airbox mods, so it will be interesting to compare.

The MAF screens are a doddle to remove, you can literally pop them off by hand. I am aware of Ess_Three's reputation on here, and to be honest if I had read his comments regarding his MAF failure before I removed my screens I would have probably bottled it, considering the wealth of knowledge he possesses on all things S3. But it's done now, and the difference is so pronounced I don't think I could revert back to the old set-up even if I wanted to. I'll just have to wait and see if his MAF failure is replicated on mine or if it'll be okay.

Also, I don't know if it makes any difference at all but mine is a BAM, I thought it was literally just a software update but someone told me the newer engines are slightly different (some kind of variable valve timing or something similar) so I wondered if there may also be subtle differences to the intake system / MAF?

S3 Adj - I dont suppose you have VAGCOM to log the MAF readings and any Torque/BHP gains?

No, but a chap a friend knows does. I've been trying to find time to see him but work has been getting in the way lately. I've got some free time over the weekend so I'll see if I can pop round.

In the meantime I'll keep you posted re how the car's running. Did a 100-mile round trip yesterday and the car was fantastic. Touch wood it'll be fine. I'll also see if I can get some clips up later on today / tomorrow.

    Bit of an update:

I ran the cone filter for just over a week and to be honest it wasnt great. The car was much slower to pick up and it seemed to have much less grunt all the way through the rev range.

It sounded great but I'd rather have power. I've lobbed the stock airbox back on now,it seemed to be using a load more fuel too?.

Cone filters on a 1.8T.....dont bother, glad it only cost me a tenner!.

I'm going to smooth my airbox and take the shields off the MAF on Monday, I'll get some pics and also do before and after VAGCOM readings.

I might have a go on mine too if I can find my die-grinder in my garage

Looking at my MAF today, it only has a shield on the intake side, which I thought was a bit odd.

I ran out of time to do anything on Monday except paint my front brake callipers! My mate couldn't find his dremmel so I cant do the smooth airbox until he finds it.

I had my maf out and tried to take the plastic shields off but it wouldn't budge! I've got a plastic grill each end and then a wire mesh shield on the intake side.
