I think its gone BANG! Clatter Clatter HELP MEEEE!

Guest
Just driven back from the GF's. Bout 10 miles. Car was fine on the way up there, left hers (didnt even stop the engine) and came out of her village.
The car had no power at all and was making a clatering noise when applyin any revs.
Its a 95 1.8 T Sport. Limped home, had a look under the hood, oil is ok, belts appear to be ok. No smoke or smells.
There are no lights in the car when driving or when re starting, so it doesnt seem to have found a fault.

So basically, no power and a noisey clatter!

There was no obvious noise before this happened by the way, no sudden bang or clout.

Thanks in advance!

Thrust bearing?

Does the noise increase in the same way if you rev it when you have your foot on the clutch?

havnt tried that yet... but why would the revs be at <500 not 900ish?

Seems very Engine related...

sounds like a catastrophic big end failure.

did it start to clatter when you put your put down to accelerate?

Yup, put my foot down outa the village, no power, turned off the stereo, and there was a quiet clatter, as I drove back it got louder.
Its off to the garage to have the knock diagnosed. But that was a drivetrain knock.

Only had it 2 weeks, and its been driven lovingly with care!

ARRRGGGGgggghhhh

Remind me why I bought a 'RELIABLE' audi again? hehe

IF it is big end what am I lookin at to fix/rebuild/replace the engine??
Lots?
Would it be worth doing anything else to the car/engine if its all apart?

Thanks guys....

Ok... just taken it to a local Garage. When i started it this mornin, there was no clater. but no power. Felt like it was flooding the engine as it picked up slightly, but took a while to do so.

It sounds like its runin on 3 cylinders, very very lumpy.
What im finding odd is that this appeared from nowhere. Was fine up the hill, and dead on the way down.

Any help would be great!

Thanks all
Its a '95 1.8T sport by the way!

Get it to a proper mechanic before you've a big bill mate, stop driving it!!!!!

Ok... just got it back from my friend who is a mechanic.
Its misfireing big time. Plugs changed, still no joy so it doesnt look simple!

The clatering has stopped. But its shakin all over the place.
No power, does accelerate but feels like it does b4 the turbo boosts.

Iv also just thought that i dont think i can here the turbo spooling.

Arrgggh D'oh!

What are my options if this is the case? Same turbo or upgrade.
Havnt got all the money in the world tho!!

Thanks!

Here is a 30 minute check for you. Remove the airbox, remover the turbo inlet pipe and sick your finger in and see if you can spin the impellor of the turbo... If its seized, it whould not really move ... If it moves freely with little resisance its probably not the turbo. The A4 turbo is changable in 1.5 hours... not a big job.

its not bein driven!
Its being checked over by quailfied people! But as u can guess AUDI (and their specialists) are closed on the weekend. So im tryin to get and idea and have a fiddle to see if there is anythin obvious!

I doo no not to drive it! but i aint leavin it in the middle of the woods... it wont be there for long!

Ok... its still missfirin, and we cant hear any turbo spool.
Theres nowt wrong with any coil packs, plugs etc. And theres no crap in the oil. (Tho its a bit dark, needs a change.)

It sounds better than it did, no rattle. But it still seems like its hunting.

NO noise from the turbo at all tho.

Turbo gone? Time for a new one?

Clatter clatter sounds like a turbo bearing gone as said above... try Rich's test to see if the turbo spins freely and see if it is catching on the housing as you spin it.

I hope for your sake it is the turbo...not too expensive if this is the case! Im sure a few guys on here have their old K03's kicking about!!

Audi cant look till friday... so im going to have some further diagnosis myself today.

If the turbo has gone... what could my other problems be? Where will any broken bits have gone, could they be in the cat? If it was oil starvation how can i check all the oil pipes? or should i just replace them if i find the turbo wont spin?

Thanx guys!

If the turbo is gone, for piece of mine, do a full oil and coolant change, replace the oil feed and return pipes and possibly the coolant feed/return. There wouldnt be anything in the cat other than maybe a small amount of oil but i woulcnt worry about it too much. Try self diagnosis...much cheaper than dealers!!

Cheers mate... helpful bunch you lot!
Makes my life (And my wallets!) MUCH easier!

Still thinkin bout the new GT28 kit from ATP! hehehe

Time to go get dirty!

Ok, just checked the turbo and it spins freely.

Started the car after, its runnin better than when it happened but its by no means ok!

Its hunting like mad, idle is not stabilising properly. The distinct clatter that was there the other night has gone and there are no odd noises.
The clatter from the other night was there constantly when it happened, at all revs, tho it got louder as the revs went up.

We have checked the plugs and coil packs, and removing each one affects running of the car so they are all ok.

Any1 got any other ideas?
Just about to see if i can get it on a VAG Com up the road.

Could the fins have broken of the turbo and gone thru the exhaust? Would they have continued to rattle for 8miles?
Why is it tryin to stall under load?

cheers all!

Broken piston? Blown Gasket... big end gone? Although a big end would sound more like a thonk thonk than a clatter.

As the car is hunting etc... seems that it is something worse than I had initially thought. Sounds like a cylinder has lost compression for one reason or another :/

Blown hole in a piston, piston ring failure. Agreed that a rod gone would sound horrendous and MUCh worse than a clatter...doubt the engine would run to be perfectly honest. I think the next port of call is to while the sump and head off and see what you/they can see. Doesnt sound good though matey. Is it running on all 4 cylinders?

Another thing to try is take the spark plugs out one by one and inspect them. See if one is in worse condition than the rest .etc

Rich

So...?

What's the prognosis?

Any more news?
