How To: Fit Aluminium S3 Pedals

    Hey everybody!!

    Right… Well I have had these pedals sat around for ages and the other day I decided to fit them. I’m not an engineer or installer and could have got one of our guys to fit them but I decided to have a go and do it myself!! Thought it would be more rewarding that way. Anyway as quite a few people have asked how you do it, I documented the process.

    Just to let you know I have a 62 Plate Manual Audi A3 Black Edition (MY13). I’m sure the process is pretty similar for the Auto & DSG Gear box.

    Here we go:

    Step 1

    Take a look at your current setup and see if you have a manual or auto setup :p

    I started with the Accelerator as it’s the one that can take a little bit longer. So to the left of the pedal there is a hidden 8mm bolt. Using a small screwdriver just pull out the hidden panel to reveal the bolt.

    Using a long reach, you can easily unscrew the 8mm bolt. If you have access to a long reach magnet then it will make it easier to grab hold of once un-screwed.

    Step 4

    Ok so the next bit for some people is quite difficult but was surprisingly easy for my pedal. You need to pull out this connector to disconnect the pedal from the car. There is a red security tab that needs to be pulled upwards first. Just get your fingernail in the groove and pull upwards slightly

    Step 5

    Once the tab is pulled up you then use it as a little lever (push down towards to floor) this will open the connector so that you can give it a quick tug and it will pull out of the pedal

    Step 6

    This was the next step I found the hardest. Removing the pedal from the floor of the car. I used the new pedal as a guide and realised there was two flat holes either side. They both have clips that you need to disengage whilst pulling that side up. Picture below shows the location of them and how the clips look.

    So I started with the left hand side first. The carpet does hide the slits but push it down and you will see it. I used a big flat headed screwdriver for this bit. You push it into the slit and then push the handle to the right. At the same time you pull that corner up (Don’t be scared to use some force)

    Move on the right hand side and when you get the flat head in you just need to push and it will disengage. Pull that corner up slightly but not fully off. (I tried to pull it straight off but it wouldn’t budge)

    Step 9

    Now with the left hand side fully unclipped and the right hand side raised I twisted the whole pedal to the left and it just popped off. This was just the method that worked for me.

    You should then have an empty area like this

    Now this is a bad photo but it gives you an idea on what those metal round clips look like

    Next is the exciting part. Get your new pedal, line up the clips and give it a hard push down and the clips will lock in. You then have to push the pedal fully down into the space. I found that getting the bolt in at this stage helped with lining the pedal up with the floor. You then need to plug the red connector back in. Once you feel a click, push that red tab back into place to keep it locked in.

    Now admittedly I did my clutch and brake pedals before anything else and didn’t get any pictures of them off. But the best way to get these suckers off is with a trim tool. Start from the bottom to get the rubber lip off and then pull really hard at the top to get that badboy off! Don’t be scared to get rough with it

    You will then be left with a nice looking pedal like this

    Once everything has been fitted into place… Stand back and admire your work

    So here is the final transformation. The old rubber pedals to the new Aluminium S3 Pedals!

    Really great guide you have. I will be using this on the wknd to install my new pedals!

    Do you know if you can get a aluminium foot rest as well, looks odd without it?

    Well if it helps one person then it was worth writing!!

    Yes I want to get a nice looking Dead Pedal... May get my own one made. There is a workshop near our unit that does metal fabrication and tooling.

    I remember this was the first mod I did (had the pedals before I had the car!). The worst part is definitely getting the accelerator off - it took lots of prodding and prising with some long screwdrivers to try and get it off, I was petrified of breaking it! The cable is easy to remove if you know to look for the tab - I'd read a few stories on here before I did it and some people said they'd broken their connector not realising there was a tab. It's surprisingly easy once you know to look for it!

    It's a must have mod in my opinion. It instantly transforms the interior!

    Do they fit? If you look at the images on the eBay listing, they show 2 screws at the top and a screw at the bottom of the dead peddle, the images of the guide above show only one screw at the top.

    I thought you screwed it over the top of the existing dead pedal? It stops just before the existing top screw.

    I used that very seller to buy my S3 pedals mate. I can definitely recommend him. My delivery took a while, but then I did order them just before Christmas. Genuine OEM product and well packaged. I couldn't find them cheaper anywhere.

    Great write up Tim. I wish I had this when I did mine as I broke my original pedals getting them out. I didn't realise they were clipped in and read another post on the forum that just said pull them up Oops :crying:

    Not a big deal, but would have preferred not to have broken them.

    Great write up. Fitted mine last weekend, from the same EBAY seller.

    The one thing (Step 5) I want to comment on. On my 57 sline the plug on the accelerator pedal had a grey clip that had to be slid down. It does latch in the down position (it takes a bit of force to do and took me a couple of attempts), in this position the plug pulls off very easily. When you push the plug back on the clip unlatches, locking the plug on.

    I also fitted a metal foot rest plate that I bought of Ebay from the seller mentioned earlier. I did need to counter sink and polish the plate. The plastic foot rest needs to be removed to fit the plate.
    To get it out.
    You undo one screw at the top of the rest and a nut on a stud hidden behind a circular panel behind the brake pedal.
    You then need to push it diagonally up and towards the front of the car, took a bit of jiggling to get it out.
    When it's out position the metal plate on the plastic rest, mark, and drill.
    Attach the plate with the supplied hardware, the supplied bolts are too long and will need cutting down.
    Refitting the modified rest is reverse of removal.

    I found getting it back on to be a complete pain, I even bought short flanged 10mm long
    stainless bolts and nyloc nuts for it but literally drew blood getting it back on as well as
    breaking a couple of the dead pedal clips.
    I put gloss black, reflective red and carbon effect vinyls behind mine to get the look in the picture.

    Here is my footwell went for the Audi rings with red insert

    The bolts with the fitting kit are far to long so you must shorten them as much as possable other wise you will not get the
    foot rest back on as it will sit to high and took me a while to refit

    Got my S3 pedals today from the Czech seller on eBay. Bought them last Friday so 4 working day delivery is pretty good.

    I will be fitting them following Cruiser's guide tonight or some time over the weekend and will get the results up as soon as I can.

    Quick question. I assume disconnecting the accelerator will not produce any error codes and I don't need to disconnect the battery?

    I didn't get any errors, and didn't disconnect the battery. Kept the keys out of the ignition until I'd completely finished.

    Just did mine today was very straightforward took about 15mins as. Mentioned the floor clips were the worst part! Looks ten times better now! Nice Guide!

    So just a word of warning, the facelift DSG dead pedal is a different shape/size to the manual (and the one I had on my ed 30 Golf DSG) so please check the correct fitment before buying.

    Same here mate. Had to buy connector from wreckers and solder the wires back together. Lucky I got it all repaired in the same day. How did you repair yours?

    If I had this DIY to follow it wouldn't of happened back then lol

    You may have the grey lock tab which needs to be pushed downward like mine. Needs a bit of force to push down and once it's unlocked you can remove the connector from the black plastic part (don't pull from the wires or the cable harness).

    Use a bright torch to see what goin on down there.

    I read somewhere to wait 15mins after turning engine off and removing key before disconnecting the accelerator connector from pedal. If it's not connected properly, you will get an error. ( I know this because I turned engine on when it was not connected )
