How many 2.0 tdi (BKD) owners have had to replace the turbo?

    With so many people reporting turbo faliure on the 2.0tdi BKD i thought it would be intresting to see how big the problem with these turbos actually is

    Can people list



    year of the car?

    mileage?

    standard or remapped?

    cost to replace and if you replaced with a standard or uprated turbo

    standard turbo £695 at VAG indie - paid £200 thanks to Warranty Direct insurance. Guaranteed for two years

    Cracking idea for a thread, my 2007 170 tdi has just started making the dreaded 'police siren' noise when the turbo kicks in

    Not sure how long i've got before it goes pop!

    Now on 59k turbo is goosed again.

    not had a replacement turbo yet and running sweet

    Sorry to dig up an old(ish) thread...

    - 2005 "55"

    - 142,000 miles (i think turbo's been on its way out before it had done 126k as that's when the previous owner had the intercooler seals replaced about 18 months ago)

    - Standard

    - Currently obtaining quotes for a standard (recon) turbo

    Quote 1 from "Russell AC" with OEM parts: £1200 parts & labour, inc VAT
    Quote 2 from Volks Autos with OEM parts: £900 parts & labour, inc VAT (waiting to hear back for quote with a recon turbo)
    Will also be getting a quotes from two other places tomorrow hopefully.
    Live in east London (near Stratford) - any suggestions of reliable and cheap garages will be appreciated.

    Had my A3 in today for the injector recall, the police siren noise was what i expected....a new turbo at £1500, thankfully i took out a warranty

    I have had the police siren noise for ages, how long on average when the noise kicks does the turbo tend to go?

    Anytime between 10 minutes and 24 months ! Anything over 75k on a BKD engine is likely to be suspect !

    Fitted a reco unit, that failed instantly, well certainly had the same siren noise as i reved upto 1400rpm..

    i might be off the beaten track with this but, here goes on my theory

    Partially blocked/clogged precat and main cat!
    possible causes for the cat blocking glowplugs giving up! Diesel heats then ignites as its compressed, obviously helped by the glowplugs. the whistle/siren could then be caused by too much back pressure!

    Check your glowplugs more often, if the turbo is passing through its actuator arm and between the intake and outlet, youll see soot>

    as i say this is my theory as to why some, and considering how many of these units are fitted worldwide, its not many considering!

    what's really annoying is my turbo only lasted 36k, as soon as it starts making the siren noise again Audi can put another one in

    What might be a more interesting question

    how many BKD turbos have given in, after the car has had injector problems, wiring loom faults for the injectors, or just glowplug issues EGR faults?

    Or a fueled up to the max remap,?

    my opinion is they are failing due to one or all of the above faults, and any one of these faults could block your cars pre cat and cat..

    That's what i've been told could be the issue, though mine's had its DPF taken out so they've said it'd be a fair bit noisier anyway. Have noticed a bit of soot in the engine bay, reckon it could be the glow plugs in my case?

    500 Euros fitted.
    Was running until that moment with a Superchips software. ~184hp & 420NM

    Car was under warranty by Edinburgh Audi and in the end needed x4 injectors, new fuel pump, tandem fuel pump and new turbo. The bill for the turbo was £1350 which they paid even though it was re-mapped. Cheers easy!!!

    How loud is the police siren, does turbo not always sound like that? could you hear it in every gear?

    I'm looking at having to replace turbo too. 2004 31000 miles not remapped. Scunnered. Audi want 2 grand to replace it. Local spannerman will do it for a grand. Local Audi specialist £1200. Grrrrr

    A bit of (Hopefully) useful info...

    This might be worth you checking guys n gals! On your downpipe there is on some cars a steel bracket which eventually starts to transfer the turbo high pitched noise through the chassis. Apparently Audi have replaced the bracket with a plastic material instead of steel. Mines a 5/4 year car, and has the plastic bracket, but this doesnt mean to say the material type is pre or post this build year! This info was given to me from a master tech friend,!

    If any of you remember on certain Audi cars, Audi fitted a plastic disc to the rear calipers as customers were saying their cars sounded like a cow mooing when breaking after reversing.. strange but true. I believe the downpipe bracket is under the car and fixes to the cross member or bulkhead.... I hope this work for some of you

    Are all these models the 140 turbo or the 170?

    Mine is a 2007 56

    2.0tdi quattro (no mods)

    Original puffer with 95k on the clock no issues.

    I have how ever owned it a year and already replaced the manifold intake control flap (£200) and had a break down at christmas which turned out to be the injectors but got them replaced by audi. Now i have a smell of diesel in the passengers compartment and the car averages 32mpg! Never had such a tempramental car thats a worry to drive now.

    Clutch and tyres next lol!

    Just got car 2 months ago end hand....garage warranty ....
    All done now ....no more siren.

    Anyone can buy a third party warranty, mines with Warranty Direct, they've paid out plenty of times on a previous car, no doubt my current policy with them will get used once the wear and tear claim exclusion period expires.

    My car has done 79k and is 2006 MY. Warranty Direct replaced my turbo last year (after wear and tear kicked in) and I've just renewed on a two year basis for a total of £495. £50 excess per claim and max £60 per hour labour charge (network rate, not main dealer but my choice ). Max 12,000 miles per year.

    For peace of mind I reckon you can't beat it, bearing in mind they pay up within 5 days of receiving the claim !

    At that mileage my parts contribution is 30% and they pay all the labour.

    Hi Markie,

    Have you any more info on this from your master tech friend, like what part numbers to look out for, I would like to change the downpipe as a 1st step in troubleshooting this issue. I've an Altea with the 2.0BKD engine any help would be great.

    I'm in the process of getting mine changed buy on fault codes I've got 3 dead glow plugs and a egr fault, the police siren is constant now even when stationary as a couple of months ago it was just when revved up to 2k, then I got a rattle and still get it
    Any advice?
