How does the 2.0TDI compare with the 2.0T in running costs

    I have a 2006 2.0TDI cabriolet s-line manual and was wondering how it compares with the equivalent petrol model in terms of running costs/fuel costs etc.

    I do around 25k miles a year of mainly motorway miles which is the reason I went for diesel but I find myself tempted by the 2.0T..

    Mine has around 75k on the clock, bought with 47k on it a year ago..

    Anyone know if what I have could get me a straight swap for a 2.0t?

    James, I am quite sure they'd be a few punters queuing up for that deal. I would have thought with you doing such high mileage that a diesel would be a better option than the 2.0t, however, I guess you have to also look at mechanic / garage costs as well, and I would expect a petrol would be cheaper to run in terms of visit to the garage and parts etc , however you'll be on first name terms wae your local petrol forecourt employees if you go on to petrol at that mileage per year.

    The choice is yours Sir.

    The tdi is pretty good on fuel, i average about 60mpg on long runs at a 60mph cruising speed. I had a mk4 gold 2.0 non turbo and would get 47-50mpg doing the same sort of stuff.

    Is diesel really that much cheaper? You pay for for the fuel anyway but obviously get more mpg so does it sort of end up being about the same?

    I'm not sure what the equivalent petrol model would be in terms of mileage, age etc..

    Would any dealers actually entertain a straight swap? I'm sure they'd be wanting some sort of cash supplement too?

    My cabby diesel returns mid 30's and I'm also considering going petrol

    That seems very low. Combined is listed as 44MPG so less usual 10% mark-up = 40MPG.

    The cabriolet's are quite a bit heavier than the normal saloons/avants. Parkers state the 2.0TDi is 150kg heavier compared to the saloon, that's like having an extra 2 people on board!

    2.0TDI gets better mpg, cheaper insurance, cheaper tax, pulls like a train and for high mileage seems a no brainer. Petrol gets the upper hand in terms of performance, extra's for example twin exhausts, bigger brakes and if your lucky a sexy DTM kit. Not much difference in servicing costs. Cost of fuel really comes down to garage and quality. Petrol or diesel can get good mpg if you drive like a granny... but where's the fun in that.

    your spot on, the cabby is carrying a fair bit more weight and combined with dpf its defo not what your expecting from a saloon or advant.. My previous vag 2.0tdi returned an easy 45+ mpg. Not convinced with the long life servicing programme either.. Car recently turned 40k at 6years old and had fuel filter changed.. Gee, feels like a different motor... Going to get it changed regardless now

    I've got the 2.0t Quattro 220 and I only really drive round town and I average 27mpg, which isn't bad for a 2.0t really. I like the sound of a petrol over a diesel which is why I went down this road. It goes well when you boot it, but sometimes you do have to drive it hard to get what you want. I found it a little under powered at first. You may miss the low down torque of the diesel tbh. But on the motorway at 80, sorry I mean 70, it returns 42mpg average. If you do a lot of mileage I would stay with a diesel all day long just coz of the range. Because I only city drive, the return wouldn't have been enough for me when buying the diesel. At the time ther was about £3k difference. Lots of pros and cons really, but it's just down to preference. Go test drive 1 see what ya think :)

    the 2.0T is a thirsty b*tch, but I still love mine

    reasonable driving= 28 to 35 MPG
    having fun= 28 all the way down to 21 ish
    on a 2 litre quattro

    That sounds low, I fill up mine with 65litres and returns 575ish every time and that's on the 2.0tdi 170

    You would be lucky if you got 280 out of a 2.0t

    And I've never seen more than 265 in 3 years

    I get 220ish miles out of half a tank on my 2.0t s line se & that's with giving it the beans from time to time

    To be honest Scotty, I'm in traffic in a morning and on a night, but i do have a heavy right foot. It seems to return reasonable figures. But these days I only put it what I need. Also run it on vpower (it loves it) seems to get nearly 50 miles extra per tank. I put £40 per week in and I get 140 miles every time :) not amazing but good for 2.0t

    Yep, I run on VPower too. Always have but think it's probably a must now I'm remapped.

    Just done a quick calculation:

    25k per year in a Diesel at 55mpg = £2850 fuel costs. (£1.38 per litre) & 490 miles to a tank.
    25k per year in a Petrol at 35mpg = £4311 fuel costs. (£1.33 per litre) & 770 miles to a tank.

    My calculations were based on only motorway driving with a fair MPG, both cars needing 14 gallons to fill up.

    I know the figures may not be accurate but it gives you an idea of fuel costs over a 12 month period.
    I average 27 mpg in my 2.0T mainly around town and the best I have ever had was 37mpg on a long motorway run from Manchester to Glasgow and back.

    I have a 2.0TFSI Quattro with an AMD remap and Milltek cat back exhaust and I average about 350+ miles from a full tank.

    Jesus wept, I've never seen 350 miles per tank in anything I've ever owned. Was gonna get mine mapped but decided to wait until I've fitted my hybrid k04 with custom map s3 injectors, hpfp and front mount. I can only imagine the figures will be nicely reduced Lol! I'm running a decat and APR carbonio intake with a stage 3 clutch and single mass flywheel and forge diverter (not the revised plastic 1) at the minute. The above figures are based in these mods. I imagine it would be better with a map

    I do less the 6k miles a year. Think I did 4k last year so doesn't matter much, should probably have an RS4. :)

    I have a 2.0t special edition that has been remapped and on a 60mph motorway trip I easily see 45mpg indicated on DIS on 40-50mph A Roads I have seen 52mpg

    We live pretty rural and I find the 2.0t great on fuel especially compared to our S4 Cab

    I usually get 400-480 on a tank. It's not a bad choice if you want something fairly economical and fun at the same time.

    I also run the car on BP Ultimate or V Power

    what map do you have chris?
    I'm playing with the thought of a remap but I'm worried the fuel economy is gonna get worse then it is now.

    My car was mapped by Angel Tuning in Banbury, it's definitely improved the economy while off boost as the map leans the fuel off from standard, boot it and I have 270bhp and then it drinks.

    Definitely worth the money, we also mapped our V8 S4 and even that thirsty beast is more fruggle now.


    I am putting the A4 up for sale tonight as I really need an estate so keep an eye out for it.... Tell your friends...

    I could with one for a week to see how it goes lol..


    I do 300miles mon - fri then it varies on weekends..

    It won't be as economical as the weasel over 300 miles but you would get good returns on the fuel at sensible speeds, and the drive would be smoother and probably more fun :)

    It just comes down to what you prefer, a few pounds in your back pocket or the enjoyment of the car on your daily commute.
