    Ello people

Just wondering, how do you guys launch off the mark in the S3? Traction on? Traction off? Where do you hold the revs? Looking to do Santa Pod sometime with a few friends for a laugh. Haven't done anything like this before. Just seems a bit difficult to me!

    Thanks dudes

The S3 is one of the easiest cars I've driven to launch. Traction off, revs up to 5kish, clutch up, bye bye. I managed to get all 4 wheel spinning in the pouring rain doing this off a round about a few weeks ago!

Really? I used to drive a Lupo GTI before so haven't had alot of power like this. Just don't want to try it and break something lol.

In 1st gear, what revs do you take it to? Also, how about 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th? I've heard people say 'redline it', then i hear people say change about 5k revs?

I dont launch like that every day :) The car isn't made of glass so it can take a bit of a pummeling.

First gear is always a bit of a rush as soon as you're off the line. I tend to change at about 6K as the torque band drops off just after 6K.

The clutch is going to go at some point so why worry about it? I'm on 114K miles on original clutch and still going strong after a year with it mapped. The previous owner did a massive ammount of motorway miles so the clutch is still fresh :) (i've probably cursed it now! Look out for my "clutch has gone bang" thread in a few days!!!)

The stelvio really is'nt that good a drive its very very tight corners, a few mates went last year in there alfa gtvs and had to do 3 point turns at alot of the corners. Def not what top gear made it out to look like.

Dont be silly, the handbrake is there to eliminate any 3 point turns :)

I'm not overly fussed about gunning it down a twisty road with a 100ft drop on one side, but it will be an experience and nice to say I've done it.

There are only a few corners like that, but they are all very tight. Need a powerful RWD car to get the best out of it with a flick of th eback end.

Nurburgring best suited to the S3 out of the two!

Back on topic...I never launch mine, too scared of killing the clutch. I've launched from about 4k revs and sidestepped before but there was a wiff of clutch then!

Prefer using the torque and grip on country lanes

i have to agree, dont think id be gunning it into those bends with drops like that. 4WD or not...thats brown pant time unless your name is Seb Loeb!

be good to know you have done it though....im still waiting for a good excuse to go to the Nurburg Ring without needing spare brakes, clutch etc! (it will happen when all the parts are fresh and i know they are)

I wont be heading back to the ring until my brake lines have been replaced, my fluid changed, and my discs and pads uprated! Last years trip was very hairy in parts due to my lack of stopping power :whistle2:

Did you get caught out on that corner that first timers usally hit the grass? Think its towards the end of the track were its a light left up a slight hill then a sharp right at the top. (Someone may know the name)

Fair play to you though. I think if i keep the S3 ill buy some goodies and head over in the summer time.
Maybe AS.net could do an organised trip?

i was looking into this as the Mini chaps are doing a similar run.... IIRC you only have 2-3 months of the year to get up/down stelvio as its shut most of the year due to adverse weather...... heard also that you have to drive on the other side on some corners as your car will simply 'bottom out' lowered or not..... looks awesome though ;)

Im taking the S3 to the ring for the first time In August next year. Usually around £275 for ferry and accomodation. Just a matter of fuel, food, drink and ring tickets after that. Easy.

Oh and my S3 will never be on a 1/4 while I own it. Im planning track car next year so maybe use that although will probably be a 1.4 to begin with to meet class rules.

I've never owned another 4 wheel drive car so I cant comment but its definitely better than all the FWD cars i've owned and the Lotus Elis I had.
