To placate the wife and son, I need to find a holiday cottage near York for either of the middle 2 weeks of August.

Anyone have any recommendations for accomodation or even things to do?

Does it have to be a cottage? There are some great little hotels in the area around Pickering. Try the White Horse Farm Hotel at Rosedale Abbey. (a Google search will find it for you)

No totally Legal, If you work in the business they sell them to staff just to get the money back to cover cost of producing whisky they have about 30 bottle left so by next month i might have a drink problem
