My old man has just sold my old S3 that he was using until his TT arrived and he has my private plate now on retention.

    S3 CYA

It really is a lovely looking plate and always got loads of comments and attention when it was on the S3, but how much do you think it is realistically worth.

Ive got no real intention of getting another S3 as I need the space that the S4 offers and he really likes his TT and has just ordered the new one, so the only thing left is to sell it really.

Any ideas people? I paid around £750 for it + fees in 2000 so would certainly like to think I could get that back from it and im not expecting anything astronomical (ie.. £5000)

Why did you pay so much for it? I wouldn't have thought CYA was that popular and all the other S3 *** plates go for around £250 inc fees etc.

but it actually says 'S3, See-Ya!' So is probably worth a bit more than other 'S3 XXX' Plates.

As Im sure your all aware any plate that spells a word or something similar carries a premium and that is why this one was the money stated.

Not at all really, when an S3 is a completely different car to a focus RS, with more power (225bhp vs 215bhp (un-modded), better driveability (quattro), looks (no contest) and ultimately it doesnt have a 'CHAV' Ford badge on the front of it.

Now a focus ST may be a different matter but at the end of the day its still a Ford and I assume you woudnt be an audi fan being this an audi forum.

But what happens when you have a focus ST with a similar plate and a 911 turbo goes by and says C'ya. This stupid argument could go on all day...

So shall we try keep it relevant please to keep the moderators happy.

I thought the reg was "S3 CYA", not "S3 MyCarIsConsiderablyMoreComfortableAndBetterLookingThanYours"?

just got my arse cracked by a focus rs in a straight drag, I know the pros of a S3 as I own one, but to have a little scally go past in the rs (may have been modded who knows) and my S3 is remapped I was just a little surprised.

Somebody is always gonna have a faster car than you, get over it. That has nothing to do with the value of this number plate.

You can pick up IHI'd SEAT Ibiza's for £8k on Autotrader, in a straight line they'd eat the S3 and FRS for breakfast - but which car would you rather own?

Number plates are very tricky things to value. Somewhere like regtransfers should give you a valuation for free, but ultimately it's only worth what someone is willing to pay. Stick it on eBay with a reserve of what you paid for it and see what happens.

I've seen S3 1 SPY (and more recently S31 SPY - perhaps plod had a word) around the area of work a few times; I always thought that looked pretty good.

I did wonder whether S3 CYA and A3 CYA are on S3s and A3s respectively though; nice to have the niggling question answered - I'm only a leading letter and a trailing letter away from you!

    Good look with the sale!

    Rob.

You may get more money for it when a new S3 is launched. Curently most running around are 3+ years old so will already either have an S3 one, or others may just not be bothered with the whole personal plate thing.

Personally I'd not purchase a plate that is tied to car due to the fact when you sell it, it no longer means anything. (as you are now finding)

Best of luck with the sale anyway, fleebay is deffo worth a look

    I want BEG 41T or HOT 80X
Proper old fashioned plates with no special explanation needed or carefully placed bolts to make it work.

Just going off on a bit (more) of a tangent...

I saw what I thought was a pretty cool plate on a beemer when I was on the way home from work last week... EA51 NOW

And the husband of a lass who used to work at our place bought a Range Rover with the reg. S4 TAN - I thought that was quite cool too; but IIRC he only had it temporarilly as it wasn't included in the sale.

My boss' Skyline wears 5 CAN; which is pretty apt. By all accounts is worth almost as much as the Skyline!

And finally (but I've never seen this one) a friend of mine is acquainted with a chap who is VERY into his cars; apparently he's got a mint condition and shockingly low milage URQ with the plate AUD 1 - if that's the case, and I ever meet the chap, I don't know which I'll be begging for first, the car or the plate!

Again, good luck with the sale. As Matt says, eBay is probably worth a go; a few mates of mine have had good return on plates sold that way.

    Regards,

    Rob.

Best plate I've seen is 1T which looks like lT obviously on a beemer 7 series, think it was a 760, it had V12 badges on the wing.
