Ive had my s4 for a day now. Not even properly booted since owning it and a warning light has come on the dash. Bought privately 60 plate.

Arghhh, doesn't bode well. Know anyone with VCDS to scan it to get a feel for what exactly could be wrong? If not, perhaps someone on here could scan it for you - whereabouts are you?

Oops! Looks like STronic issue Was about to suggest exactly what TechNick suggested. Whereabouts are you based, try VCDS map to find someone close to you for a quick scan to find out exactly.
It could be a simple drive range sensor as sometimes it can throw an error when it detects a missed shift. I'd do the scan first.

I live in south london but need to get the car home

Private seller no chance, you're on your own I'm afraid.

I'd be getting it striahgt to some sort of VW/Audi specialist, not a main dealer. It's all good doing a VCDS scan but it won't fix anything mechanical.

It turns off every now and again

Nightmare. Wonder if they just cleared the fault and sold it. :( As the others have said needs a scan to determine what's wrong. Might also be worth looking for a transmission specialist near you just in case. For example

http://3dtransmissions.com/

I believe these guys fixed @razza1 old S4.

What's the symptoms? Have you lost gears with the error? Either odd gears or even?
Any clunking when going 2-1? Reverse engaging ok?
You can get an OBD reader and carista app to scan the codes

S4 MRC Stage 2+ gone
Stealth Black XFS now more sensible :)

On and off when driving, or on and off when turning the car on and off?

On and off when driving but turning the car off does turn it off.

Will it reboot when you switch off, wait then switch on and clear fault. Had similar fault on mine but I had parked on a very steep drive been cleared for the last 6 months

I imagine this is a worrying time for you, and you're bound to have lots of questions driving around in your head. Realistically though, you're not going to know anything until the car's had a scan to diagnose what is actually wrong. Until then, everything about what might need doing, who could do it, and how much it might cost, is guesswork.
