Help... Noisy engine at low speed / revs

Ideas anyone? My engine (3.0 TDI) has started sounding like an old transit van when I pull off from stopped. Once I get to around 20 mph the noise goes away. Excuse the bad description but I'm not mechanically minded at all, I just love my car and I'm worried about the noise it's making! Any help would be really appreciated.

..It's a 2008 avant le mans, 120k miles and sounded fine until a few days ago.

Is the oil level ok?
Does it put out smoke (white or black)
Does it stop clattering once it's warm?

Oil level is ok
There's a bit of black smoke when accelerating hard but not during normal driving
Gets better when it's warm but doesn't stop completely

Any advice would be appreciated!

Somebody else may comment but it sounds like it could be your chain tensioner.

With out actually listening to it its hard to say when u lift the bonnet what area is the noise coming from
