I had my cam belt and water pump replaced while on holiday in Yorkshire last weekend but when I called to collect the car, my mechanic mate asked me if I'd heard the rattle from under the rear of the car? I said I hadn't so he took me out for a drive and said that the noise sounded to him like a broken rear spring.

Sure enough, when I got the car home and felt around the N/S spring seating, I pulled out the top pigtail that had broken off, fallen inside and was bouncing around when I went over bumps. The strange thing was that I'd never heard the noise myself but my brother said that he could hear it while driving behind me with his windows open. The car sits normally on the road and behaves perfectly in all respects.

I'm now trying to source a replacement pair but I'm having trouble establishing whether or not the S-line needs special springs.

I've found Sachs Part No. 627445890 on line for £63.60 each but does anyone know if these will fit my car?

Also, I've been told that to replace the springs you need a special type of compressor with two long arms that pass through the coils as the standard type of compressor won't fit. Is this correct?

I'd appreciate advice and guidance with this.

I change mine a few months ago .. the guy who change them did not understand me that i want OEM and buy cheap staff from Eurocarparts ... when he fit them and i saw my car - he start removing them ... I bought OEM from Audi 180Gbp as far as i remmember but when second time been fitted - bob on :)

If you want you can change all 4 same time with some lowering staff but do not buy cheap as they are different load index and look S*it
I don't want to lower the car just to keep it as standard.

As Audi don't manufacture springs themselves and buy them in made to their specification from specialist manufacturers, I don't think it makes sense to pay their mark-up for an Audi box if I can obtain the exact same item from the same factory for a fraction of the price but in the manufacturer's own packaging. When I had the new Gates OE cambelt/water pump kit fitted, I noticed that the belt tensioner was made in Canada, one roller in France and the other in Romania. The original tensioner that came off the engine was also stamped 'Made in Canada', the only difference being that it was also stamped with the VW Audi logo.

Does anyone know who supplies coil springs to Audi?

Just buy Genuine from Audi.

I see your point, but there are MANY variations of the springs, they are all colour coded based on chassis, engine type and ride height.

They are about £90 from Audi each, I would probably replace both with new rather than just one to be honest.

i bought two aswell and yes the price was 90 ish for one ...
like Cyrix said - they are all different type because of engine fwd or quattro , avant or saloon etc etc

Thanks, Guys. I'm sure you are both right and I've taken your advice.

I called at our local independent VW/Audi specialist for a quote and was surprised to find that their genuine Audi springs, which are guaranteed to be the right ones, are £78 each. They did explain that fitting them is a bit of a pig as the rear suspension has to be lowered to remove and replace the springs and will require one hour labour per side.

Anyway, it's now booked in for next Tuesday when they are also going to re-gas the air con as the 'Econ' light stays on when 'Auto' is selected and the pressure switch is showing a fault code.

I don't expect to have much change from £400. :sorrow:

Well, I was right. There wasn't much change from £400 - there was none. (sob!)

When they regassed the empty air con system it still wouldn't work and the pressure switch had to be changed. So, with two new springs at £78 each, a pressure switch at £58 (all genuine Audi parts), air con service at £50, plus three hours labour and the dreaded VAT on top, the final bill came to a hefty £528.

At least I now know that the car is safe to drive and I shall be sure to keep the air con on 'auto' in future to make sure that the system continues to function correctly.
