Hi all,

My garage have hit a dead end trying to remove a pinch bolt from my nearside suspension :( and I have been told I need to try and get a second hand hub / hub carrier or whatever this part is that the pinch bolt is sheared in..?

Been told it will be £££££££ from Audi so 2nd hand is my only option.. anyone know of one second hand or able to point in the right direction??
Stressed

Much appreciated
J

Seriously, if they can’t get that out you need to find another garage.

Problem is... I now have a car that cannot be driven and I am told there is no way it's coming out..? Apparently they have had the part on their press(?) And all sorts and the sheared bolt isnt moving even after being soaked

No but you can take the part to someone who knows how to deal with it. The part is called a hub carrier.
An air chisel would be a better choice to remove the pinch bolt, they are trouble but I’ve never heard of a garage that wasn’t able to deal with it.

Just bring it to @QuattroCalum's house who says it's easy and knows how to do it but always takes his to a garage

Probably worth trying Euro Car Parts, GSF or eBay, if you can't find the actual part on eBay it's worth searching for someone on there who's breaking a car local too, there's a part request thing on this site as well which some people say is alright.

I'm a bit lost when it comes to part numbers and parts but which side is this for? (not sure if they're universal?) also where are you based?

Have a look on Fleabay there are plenty on there, you may even find one localish to you. If not then ring around some breakers. Quite often they come with arms attached which is fine as long as the arms are good. You could find yourself in the same predicament trying to get the bolt out if they aren't.
If the bearing is any good on the old hub I would get them to unbolt it and keep it as a spare. Only takes a minute to unbolt it when you have it off the car like you do.

Thanks guys... I'm based in south Wales

Currently trying to find any fabricators in the area myself to see if they can drill it out and repair the thread... But failing that I'll have to just get a new part as they suggest..

Apparently it's Audi only as I did ask whether Europarts etc would stock

Are they different between models? Its the nearside front on my quattro 1.8t Avant

Thanks!

This one is in Cardiff. I believe the part is the same across all models.

There is no thread in that hole. The bolt just runs through the hole and pinches the ball joints on the 2 connecting arms. The problem occurs because the arm is alloy and the bolt is steel. Most garages would be able to get that out especially if they are VAG specialists as it is a regular thing.
An engineering shop should be able to drill it out and remove it

That's helpful , thank you. I'll try catch them before they go refitting it to move the car a few foot and try get it to the fabricators I spoke with earlier. Fingers crossed!

Taken to the garage for one side because I had to drill the other side out.
The only thing my car has gone to the garage for except MOT. Seem to have missed the part where I said it was easy?

Passat’s has this problem as well, steel hub carrier and steel bolt, even with the same metals it posed a problem, it’s just a poor design.

So slight update.. the fabricator has managed to get the bolt out and will be finishing it up tomorrow ensuring that everything is perfect for installing the new bolt. He said that the top control(?) Arms look to be a bit out of shape so I'm hoping the garage can replace these as it seems they may have damaged when removing..

Goddddd I hope these b5 spring perches are worth it..... :unamused:

Just thought I would conclude this with a thank you for the replies and fortunately IT WORKED! The avant is home where it belongs along with a service cambelt and waterpump

Phew
