I have a 2010 Audi A4 2.0 TFSI, I have noticed a few concerns please find below:

1) Oil Consumption Issue - 1ltr Oil Every 500 Miles
2) White Smoke - When Engine is warmed up - Cold Start no Smoke
3) Engine Rattle - Odd Rattle sound can be heard - CLICK HERE
I have contacted Audi UK regarding the Oil Consumption Issue, Whom have very nicely offered to look into it further and place it on a Oil Consumption Test.
4) Whilst on boost at higher gear at low speeds I get a crackle from the engine bay and white smoke

I was advised on my last service that the car is a TD1 which again concerns me as I was not aware of this prior to purchasing the car.

Where do I stand with the TD1 if this was prior to my ownership? as a purchaser you can not tell prior to purchase.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know exactly why no one has posted on this thread, but in all fairness most of these issues have been covered in the past, use search function.

The TD1 issue, I'd think that you would have to get back to the seller about, if they are proper trade then it is their responsibility - it is a risk they take with every used car they sell and if they invested in equipment to check over every car they took in as stock, they could save themselves and their customers a bit of grief - but what do they care!

Best you read this thread (2.0T Oil issue engine repair cost) and get ready to raid your piggy bank.

but it could also be the turbo seals

I hope so, for their sake.

why for there sake ?
if its a bad engine they will sort it one way or the other
did you buy from audi ?

but with the TD1 they may try to get out of it.
or if not bought from audi get in touch with the dealer you bought from and question the TD1

also did audi say why the TD1 was placed on the car.

I hope for their sake it is turbo seals rather than the far more costly burn't out piston rings.

For the latter problem buying from Audi Dealer/Reputable trader certainly does not guarantee you are not facing very large bills (£500 - 6k) as experienced by many to date posting on 2.0TFSI oil burning Threads..

Yes TD1 complicates thing further in warranty claims.

Anyway B4VVM, I wish you the very best of luck in resolving it.

I had a discussion with an Audi performance specialist (private guy not Audi). We were discussing the whole oil consumption issue. He reckoned its all to do with the coating used on the 2.0 TFSi cylinder bores. Apparently its only an issue on the 2.0 TFSi engine. He won't buy in any car with that engine as they are well known for the oil problem amongst dealers. Why in h**ls name are Audi not doing something? There is obviously a problem with the engine type. Audi should be resolving this issue for us but then again are they like any other big company and see it as not their problem?

I love the car and am currently only using 1L per 1500 miles of oil but that's still extremely high compared to any other car I have ever owned.

When I trade in I will do it with Audi if only to give them the problem back!!!!

My understanding is that audi are reluctant to take these cars in part exchange because it'll cost them to put right as most part exchanges are people getting shot because of this issue

I am not convinced on the coating on the bores as from what I have seen of repair bills, cylinder block replacement is rarely needed unless the car has been running too long with burn't out rings, something i doubt any coating would endure.
Your specialist reflects what I have heard from many car supermarkets/traders etc. I spoke with one trader who is footing the bill for 6 repair jobs. He showed me the receipts, urging me to go legal and telling me he will support me in any claims. It would be interesting to know how 'burn't' (excuse the pun) your specialist got?
You know what this means, until Audi 'fesses' up and sorts it, your TFSI car (if you have one) is worth peanuts unless it has a £500-6k (variation dependant upon 'goodwill') Audi warranted repair job. Then its worth two peanuts.

Tfsi have cold blast honed bores. It's a coating-/treatment that's supposed to aid bedding in AFAIK. when this has gone it's just a normal cast iron block. But if patchy you end up with uneven wear

I get what you are saying, but I guess if Audi Germany is mandating replacement pistons/rings/conrods and not the block (unless necessary) then the bore coating is not the primary cause of the ring failure problem. If the bores were the primary cause of the problem I guess Audi Germany would be mandating block changes for all engines, which from Audi repair bills I have seen is definitely not always the case.

I have heard from two people that it is down to piston dimensioning. The more specific explanation is that the oil scraper ring was mounted too close to the gudgeon pin and became an area for localised ring failure. Though this is yet to be confirmed by others. Though it is worth noting that the new pistons have new part numbers and have been redesigned. I have no confirmation of what exactly has changed.

Yes the main cause is the poor piston design exasperated by running in coating. . New pistons , rings and rods seems to fix it . Time will tell

Are you doing repairs yourself?

If so do you know what they have changed in the piston design? Or are you using non OE parts? Does non OE save much money?

and it the 18T B8 not only the 2.0

I thought that I had read somewhere that the bore coating treatment, same treatment as some BMW engines, was only an issue with a previous version of this 2.0T engine, maybe only fitted to B6 and B7. I've also read about the design issue with rings too close to where the gudgeon pin area is.

Okay guys,

So a little update, been arguing my case with Audi UK as they told me my car was a TD1 - modified Remapped so no goodwill. Funny enough another Audi dealership had a look and they couldn't find a TD1 so I went back to the dealership that did the oil consumption test in the first place and they checked and it has disappeared of there computer systems aswell. "GREAT NEWS".

So now as it stands I await Audi UK and the dealership to call me back to agree on a price point. Last time we spoke it was at about £1020 contribution from my side. I feel after several months of being messed around from Audi I shouldn't be paying nothing for the repairs so I have put it straight to them and I hopefully hear a response within 48 hours to let me know.

Audi UK and the dealership seem to say that the Pistons it self are not required to be changed???? Anyone shed some light on why that would be?

They have quoted 5800 for full works so far.

MIne had 98k on the clock and had full audi service history until I purchased from a non franchised dealer. I was unaware of the oil issue when purchasing the car so went ahead and had a Revo stage 1 remap. Had mine in for oil consumption test failed so was facing a bill of approx half the quoted 5800!

Went ahead and while work was being done Audi Vindis Huntingdon phoned and said they will be paying everything in full!!!

So fingers crossed you should get a better result!
