Hi all

Having problems with the car starting and hope that someone can give me some advice

the problems started the other week when i came back to the car after shopping and went to start it. it wouldn't start just the starter motor just turning over nothing else no lights

after a few goes it eventually started but lots of lights on the dash esp brakes ext. i turned the car off and it restarted and cleared the lights no problem

over a couple of days it was fine then all of a sudden it did it again.

i thought it might be the battery in the fob so changed that and its been fine.

been out to the car tonight and tried to start it and no joy.

i scanned the car, and vcds couldn't find the engine module and lots of errors came up saying unable to communicate with the engine.

when i eventually got the car to start i scanned it again and the engine module was found.

i am thinking that it is the ignition coil stoping the engine turning over

when the car starts its fine its just getting it started

no lights show on the dash.

so question is, do i phone audi in the morning and order a new ignition coil and swap it over or does it sound like me engine ecu is on its way out ?

next question is what size torque screwdriver do i need to take off the lower cowling of the strearing column ? as i don't own any thin torque screwdrivers that will go in the long narrow hole

all advice helpful because I'm taring my hair out with the car at the moment its cost me so much money the last couple of months with lots of problems.

cheers

gaz

How about battery trouble.Have you tried to jump it when it won't start.

Do diesels have ignition coils? I thought they were compression ignition only.

Hi sorry

I don't mean the ignition coil in the engine I mean the barrel that goes around the ignition key to read the imobaliser code from the key fob

I have read that the cables / key reader coil that goes around the key go faulty and I'm guessing that the imobiliser isn't being switched off when the key is put into the ignition to start the car and hence the car won't start .

It's had a brand new battery the other week and it's turning over, the starter motor is turning but the car doesn't start. Which is making me assume it's the imoberliser not de activating and allowing the fuel pump on ect.

What confuses/ worries me is that when I scan it with vcds it Carnt connect to the engine ecu but when I finally get the car started after 20 or so goes. The engine and car drive fine and vcds can connect to the engine ecu.

I'm guessing and hoping that the imoberliser is locking out the engine ecu and that's why vcds is unable to connect to the engine ecu until the engine is running.

If that isn't the case then it's looking like a faulty engine ecu which I seriousuly hope it's not that:-(

If it was immobiliser car would start for 2 seconds then cut out with flashing key symbol. Have you checked your glow plugs?
There is no point guessing and replacing parts constantly. Get car scanned with someone who is good with vcds or take

Right ok then so at least I know it's not the immobiliser because the car will start. It's looking like a costly trip to the garage then.

Just clutching at straws here but does anyone know why vcds wouldn't find the engine ecu ? Is there anything to check for ? I just hate to think that is a simple fix and I never checked it.

I'll post a scan in a bit see if anyone can throw some light on the matter

I'm off on Monday so will arrange for it to go to the garage but just want to check any things I can first.

I Carnt believe that this is something else to go wrong in a long list of problems

Handbrake stuck on so while fixing that had new rear discs and pads due to them needing it soon

The roof motor seized and had to strip it down to fix the roof

The battery died so needed a new battery

Major fuel leak the fuel line had cracked so new line required

New tyre on the rear due to a screw in the side wall

Plus it's due it's MOT in a weeks time

And now this

Plus I had to re insure the car again and pay road tax all in a space of 2 months so I'm megger skint at the moment

So any advice/suggestions gratefully received
Cheers

One very broke and depressed audi owner

There is a relay that supplies voltage to the ecu, don't really know where it is,on some cars its in the ecu box,but I would like someone else to confirm this one is.

Have you checked the new fuel line?, tiny air leak can allow air in and allow all the fuel to run back to the tank, so when you start it no fuel until you wind it back up again.
I dont know if theres some way you can run the in tank fuel pump before trying to start it, get pressure up then see how it starts, can be a real sod finding these sort of leaks
On wifes a4 3.0 theres a fuel pump fuse in the fuse board under right hand dash side panel, one of the mini ones iirc?

I'd the same problem on an 8l a3 mate and it was relay 109 under steering wheel that was for fuel pump. It wAs out about 1mm I cable tied it in and never happened again. Maybe check
Take under steering wheel cover off and check the relays there are all in. Google to see which one in b7 is for fuel.

Thanks for the heads up. i will check the relays under the steering wheel tonight making sure they are all in place.

i'm guessing that its not the fuel pump due to the engine ecu not showing up on VCDS. I'm now thinking that there is a faulty relay somewhere which supply's the ecu module power. So if anyone knows which relay switches the power to the engine module and where i could find it id be very grateful

if not i'm going to have to get my laptop out on my day off on Monday and try and work out which relay is which.

until then i'm back using public transport

heres a copy of the scan log

as you can see there is no engine module listed which is making me think that its not getting power and hence not showing when i scan the car

the second one is when i eventually get the car going and its there and all ok

any other suggestions or help will be gratefully received

Right thought I would just sum up this thread just for people who might have a similar problem in the future.

I found out that the main power relay was faulty. This relay switches on and provides power to the ECU. The relay is situated underneath the ecu in the engine compartment.

I found that when the car wouldn't start if you banged the ECU box it would then fire up.

Took me a while but I managed to get to the bottom of it and fix it myself :)
