Help me indentify this hose.

Have been to my local audi dealership who were happy to quote me for the part and labour, but won't tell me the specific part number. They want £28 for the part or over £110 to supply and fit the part. Right.

Following the thermostat change being a success, this pipe drips coolant constantly and if you move it, it squirts.

It looks like this has been previously bodged - the clip they have reused appears too small for the pipe diameter and the rubber has cut and gone through the inside of the clip - nice workmanship there..

Can anyone help me?! Please!!
 
Similarly, if you can tell me what the diameter of the hose is meant to be, I will buy a length of it and some jubilee clips and DIY the repair to the correct spec!
 
Or you could just measure it....

Just take it off, fire down to Motorworld or whatever and get some boggo heater hose. Done.
 
i assume it's an AGU 1.8t?

it looks like the turbo coolant pipe has been leaking too, i'd attend to that while you're at it.

may be easier to buy a 45 degree silicon bend, i think it was 16mm ID but you'd have to double check.
 
I'm still unsure so will just buy the audi part, at least I know it will fit.

It's the 1.8T engine, no idea what "AGU" means. I am a novice so will just get the kit from audi - it includes the metal hoses which go from the expansion tank to the engine so will take it to a local garage and get it done by then.

I've replaced a crappy BMW which has problems with the cooling system with an A3 which has exactly the same issues, it couldn't be scripted!! Lol.

Look before you buy...;)
 
It was a straight swap with a friend - the BMW needed a drive chain kit, a new A/C pump, new discs on the back, few other things.

This thankfully is a small repair (I hope) - I've just removed the old hose...the clip has completely sheered through the hose - talk about a bodge repair..
 
Tinkering with the cooling system on the 1.8T is shimples and a good way to get started learning about the car.

Go to your local TPS or even Audi garage and get some spare G12 coolant and some distilled water to top up the system if you need it.

AGU is an engine code. If you have the black cover off the engine you'll find a lug on the leading edge of the engine at one end that has a 3 letter code.
Have a look at this picture.

You'll notice my red tool box in one corner. Just to left is a shiny jubilee clip, the engine code is stamped on a bit of flat bit metal behind the jubilee clip.

If you can confirm the engine code it will be easier to give you a part number, but a bog standard 45 degree silicon or coolant spec. pipe from any auto factor will be fine.

Thanks for explaining this - I read your reply by email on my phone when walking to Halfrauds and a few other auto shops who didn't want to help me without the P/N!! Instead I came away with 4 jubilee clips as I prefer them, personally.

When I got home, I just trimmed the bad bits of pipe off and refitted, then topped up the system and bled it. BTW, the coolant I use is Comma G30+ - when looking for G12 when my friend replaced the thermostat for me, I did plenty of research and found G30 replaces G12.

One of the photos is what I chopped off the hose. I cannot believe a mechanic would do such a bad piece of work on his own car...actually made me want to cry when I realised I had been driving it with such a crappy piece of work.

I actually enjoyed doing this repair, it is very DIY but I did a much better job than the owner previous to my friend who I acquired the car from! I have attached some photos so you can rate my work... :D I have noticed one of the plastic tubes behind this does appear to have a pin hole leak as just now when topping up oil and screen wash, I felt around and felt a bit of a drip. It isn't leaking anywhere near as badly as the part I had to repair earlier this afternoon, but I will replace it in the very near future.

Ah, I was just quoting what was on the product description :D

Thanks for the link - I will order one of those and replace it when funds allow. Beats spending 30 quid for an entire assembly which isn't needed.

Typical how these things no matter how cheap always seem to go when you have no spare money at all.
 
Cool. Well done.

TBH I like the warm fuzzy feeling you get paying through the nose for OEM parts (yes I have a sore bum) and fitting them myself as they are usually fairly good quality and will last 10 years.

For the coolant, as long as your system only has that stuff in that's good. You can get into awful sticky messes mixing different makes/types of coolant.

If the hard plastic pipe is leaking - you might want to get that done sooner rather than later now the weather is getting cold.

I'm actively looking at what to replace it with but struggling to get a part number for it, this is the only thing i tend to struggle with!

And yes, we cooled the engine down, drained the system, flushed it with clean water and then did the 50/50 mix with G30. This is another reason I was pleased I got the leak to stop on my own, because I have had mechanics put different coolant in and i've not realised - the BMW was the worst for it because the expansion tank was not see through!! Urgh.

Where in the UK are you?

If I get stuck on a part number I have a really good TPS a few miles away and they're always more than happy to play identify the part in my engine bay. They have good prices too for the proper VAG stuff.

I am in Boston in Lincolnshire - it's a bit 3rd world to be honest...

I didn't visit every autoparts place, but with a stinking cold I decided to halt my attempts to find a part I didn't have the number for and just go home and do a (half decent) bodge of my own, lol.

I'll check the link out.
 
TPS website says there's one in Lincoln. Give 'em a ring for a price.

It definitely isn't great, but if they are able to assist with any part ID'ing it may save me money in the long run.
 
Hi,

Replaced the hose this morning with the new one you linked to (after cutting it down to size, etc) and it is perfect. However, I now have a problem of a tiny miniscule hole in the Y section of plastic piping which the hose connects to.

EuropaParts.com: Coolant Expansion Tank Hose (Lower, 1.8T) - 1J0122109AQ

That is what I need to replace, but I can't seem to find this available to buy anywhere in the UK, which I find odd. Do any of you guys know where I can find a place to buy this piece?
 
Yes, but the website you linked me to - the order would have been near $110 for the total order once it was shipped to the UK. I found this website by pure fluke when getting info and pics together to email some parts places local to me.
 
lol :think: wasn't telling you to order from there. It showed, the part number and picture ... so you could go order from TPS or somewhere similar ...
 
I know - I was asking if anyone could recommend anyone else in case there were any sites with prices listed (TPS are really far from me and haven't responded to my emails yet) - but I've found someone now :D
 
Never mind - it's your initial assistance that helped me in finding this part anyway - can't thank you enough.

Rolling up my sleeves and just forcing myself to learn how to fit this sort of thing is saving me valuable money - £200.00 to be exact...
