Hi all, just after some advice...

My car starting playing up on Friday last week, to cut a long story short, today I've found out after having the engine stripped, that part of the manifold has disintegrated, been sucked into the engine, and now the engine is damaged beyond repair. So I'm looking at paying for a new or nearly new engine.

I would guess that the car is approx 3 months out of it's 3 year warranty. Are Audi UK likely to help me out and if so can anyone who's had dealings of this nature give me any advice on how to go about it?

Cheers

Few details mate ? what engine/mileage ,where did you buy the car, has it a FASH ? any mods etc ?

Yeah, sorry. I'm still in shock.

It's a 2.0 TDI (DPF) 170, car first registered on Jan 2007, done 80,000 miles, and according to the independent garage it's with at the moment (that specialises in VAG) the engine is damaged beyond repair due to damaged manifold flaps being sucked into the engine and damaging various components on the way, injectors etc.
I spoke to the audi dealer who sold me the car in Bedford, they told me I needed to deal with my nearest dealer which is Preston, they were less than helpful and having spoken to Audi UK customer services I'm told that if I don't have a full Audi FSH then "Audi Goodwill" won't be extended to me.
Considering that these days using a non audi dealer service doesn't affect your warranty, I don't see how the same can affect my ability to be considered for "Goodwill"

Audi Uk said they will open a case for me but can't do that until I get the car to a dealer, it's now in St Helens, can't be driven, but it's my responsibiliity to somehow get it to Preston or Liverpool. Then if I do get it to a dealer, they inspect it and I get nothing then I'll also be charged for the dealer's time and have to transport the car elsewhere. Apparently if I don't have a full Audi FSH (only the last 2 have been done by an independent) then the likeliness of Audi "coming to the party" as they so eloquently put it, is extremely slim.

A car that's 3.5 years old, was just under £30k new, should not need a new engine already! I do mainly motorway miles, it's serviced when it needs to be, and I like the car so have looked after it well. As you can imagine I'm not too happy at the thought of forking out £5-£6k to get it back on the road, I've heard of cases where even on cars just out of warranty Audi have contributed when the problem has been this severe.

When I had issues with my A6 that was a few months out of warranty I got a 'token' contribution when it needed a new head due to it being porous. But I did have full service history. Like your dilema, they had mine in bits when they told me my bill would be approx £2k but if I wanted to repair it somewhere else i'd have to pay £400 to put it back together!! I got it repaired there. Hope you get it sorted cos thats awful for a car so young depite the mileage! (mine was a high miler) Good luck

Well I have no idea about dealing with Audi UK, but I would suggest that under the sale of goods act, if it got in front of a judge then I reckon they'd side with you that a thirty grand car should last longer than three years. I reckon they'd take a dim view of them trying to make you cough up to get the car to a stealer and charging you for a tech to look at it. That said, you're gonna need a report from an independent expert to make sure your case has stones.

Best of luck.

I Tend to agree but personally do not think you have much chance, as if I recall the Audi Warranty is 60k and 3 years, so you are well out, though they may offer a guest token, sure it will not be a lot. It does annoy me that Audi only offer 60k 3 years, it is a poor warranty if their cars are suppose to be so good and reliable why not offer same as other manufacturers.
I think Audi cannot force the have you had it serviced by us on to you, but that said you will have to prove you have had it serviced by someone who can carry out the service to Audi spec, and be officially recognized to do so.

I do feel for you, possible to claim on car insurance as it is so much money?????

HMM this new forum site look change does not show bold white print too well :(

Audi may not require a FASH for warranty because thats the law but the law doesn't extend to good will. Without that FASH and with a car thats done nearly 3x average mileage i think you will be out of luck.

People that buy quality cars and pay the price do not buy reliability. Its far easier to make a KIA last 7 years of warranty because its a simple car. Audi's and Merc's will not be as reliable as Fords and Vauxhalls because the extra money spent on the Audi is for solid build, quality interior, superior paint finish , better leather seats, better quality exnaust and excellent wheels. The bits that go wrong are just the same as Ford but there is more of them..
If you look at the problems on these threads, blown Turbos, porous heads, coil packs, DSG boxes etc the basics are no better in fact the V6 coil pack is the same as the Bentley coil pack. Unfortunately if you ask a TVR owner, A porcshe owner, a Ferrari owner, or a Bentley owner if money buys reliability i think you will get a resounding.....NO !

I still reckon if you put your case in front of a judge, they'd side with the opinion that a £30k car should last longer than it has, especially with a FSH (even non-Audi). I think giving Audi the hint that you're considering doing so might force their hand a little, or might make them slightly more helpful.

If you want good will from Audi you need to bow and scrape. You try and force their hand and watch them clam up tight. Look at my sig.....You are speaking to a man who knows.

I agree, if you go to them threatening to take legal action etc then they will just turn away. You need to be nice to them and see where you get. Mine had high miles and I did get a token, I was nice to them lol!

I agree here with Paddy and Sarah (us 3.2 people have to stick together hey!)

I found that they take more notice if mention brand and say that you would struggle to reccomend Audi to friends or buy another one......

Being realistic I'm sure Audi's legal team could (if they wanted) walk circles around the majority of local legal firms!

thanks for all your input, I agree with all points.

Having spoken with trading standards this morning, and then spoken to audi uk again, this time about the sale & supply of goods act, I've decided that i'm not prepared to let this go. I'll pay the independent what I owe them so far including putting the engine back together, RAC will take the car to liverpool audi for a fee then fingers crossed that the dealers diagnosis agrees with my point that this shouldn't happen to a well looked after 3.5 year old car, that is german engineering - supposably reliable!!!!

Trading standards reckon I should push for audi to pay for the lot, not just a token gesture. And agreeing with your point Sarah, I'm being very nice about it all, I'm not the type to rant and rave, and my VAG loyalty to this point has been fierce!

My last couple of services may not have been at an audi dealer, but they've been at an independant that specialises in VAG, and all parts are genuine audi parts. The last service was a big one, timing belt kit, water pumps etc, and it's all documented. I reckon (maybe naively) that I've got a good chance.

Well Bingo, you have nothing to loose. Spoken to a few at Liverpool and they seem ok. Good luck and keep us posted

AUDIS & MERCS ARE NOT AS RELIABLE AS FORDS & VAUXHALLS!!!
What planet have you been on for the last 15 years.

Dont worry Khufu.....he cant help it. He will carry on till the mods ban him....again !

Its not really racist its just shows how ignorant he is.

What i cant help is reading such rubbish as you write.
Your knowledge of reliability regarding the modern day car is obviously very very limited.
You are quite plainly a man who is still iving in the dark ages, & therefore shows himself up as being completely naive when making such statements as you just have.
You personally obviously have a huge issue right now with the Audi marque.
All manufacturers today have a dog on their hands in one way or another in terms of reliability & problems, thats just the way it is now.
But let me tell you, as a man who has owned just about every make therE is going. Audi come out very very well in todays troublesome marketplace.
Next time you wish to make such silly statements, you should ask yourself first. Do i really know what i am talking about? Or am i just bleating again, because i feel so sorry for myself because i own a dog!

He is right a Ford can be more reliable than a Porsche.......

Look at the 996 or 997..... I bet more have had new engines than Ford Ka's have...

Paying more doesnt mean you get reliability..... Although reliability isn't always what your paying for...

why are you so angry MR ANGRY? being angry isnt all its cracked up to be. despite what other angry people might tell you!

Bingo 27. Ask the Audi dealer who are looking at your engine whether they are an empowered dealership. An empowered dealership have the authority to make a good will gesture and help you out as the car is only just out of warranty. See how you get on.

Oh you poor deluded individual...I have owned most cars as well including a lot before you were even a little nightmare in your dads eye. If you think you can buy reliability then go ahead and buy a 1.1 micra. Have a look at the JD power survey and see where Audi comes in relation to Skoda...
You can buy quality materials and craftsmanship as well as innovative design and super performance but motronic ignition systems dont magically become more reliable in an Audi as opposed to a Ford.
Now go away please.

I do think modern day cars are defiantly less reliable than cars from 15-20 years ago, but it is not major issues, like engine/gearbox failure, it is all the little things they put on like sensors etc. I have bought a lot of new cars/vans in the last 25 years, and it is the last few more expensive ones I have bought that have the minor niggling issues, except the RX8, that car should have never been sold full stop, I have never had problems like I have with that one after 6 years and 50k miles on any car ever bought.

Of course cars a re a lot more complicated now days with a hell of a lot more on them, but still I have to admit, still not impressed with cars in general today for reliability

As for Audi, Certainly they seem to have problems, but many of their problems are hyped up a bit because of the internet, as are other higher end cars.

I agree Brett.
When i look at what has gone wrong with my last few cars its mostly items that simply were not fitted to cars 15-20 years ago...Lambda sensors, Gearbox solenoids, aircon ecu , coil packs....My 406 coupe went through18 in 2 years, Engine ecu, cam position sensor and so on

It stands to reason that with tighter emissions regulation then the drive for efficiency will mean cars get more and more complicated while price cutting gets even harsher.
As for Audi. well its been nearly 6 weeks since i took my car in for a minor misfire at 45k miles. i could have brought a brand new Micra with the money its cost so far. so why is this taking so long ?? well the bottom line is the complexity of the car and if it doesn't have a fault code your stuck. Audi charge £1200 a DAY !! in the workshop so once you start doing exploritary work the hours clock up pretty quick. Nissan offer 6 year warranty Kia i think is 7 year and i bet they are every bit as reliable as Audi and if they do go wrong you can just buy another, cheaper than fixing the timing chain on a 3,2.....lol

It is like my S3, a few months old, has a very slight engine hesitation with the Revo one, it is a lot more noticeable than with no Revo, it may have been there before I had stage one added, but once stage one was added it becomes really apparent, now that I know it is there without stage one, I can feel it, no fault code, so If I took it to Audi now under warranty with out Revo one, they would prob laugh at me, and spend god knows how long trying to find it. Of course I will have to have it looked at eventually, but dreading it, it has spoilt for me a little what is a wonderful car, that I love to drive, and actually for the first time in a along time just enjoy driving.

I do think OP you do have a good chance of getting something out of Audi, if it be total cost cover hard to say, prob not. but you are going about it in the right way. by Law you are actually entitled to something, it is how much it costs you to enforce it.

Its a difficult one Brett. having been in touch with Audi GB and the garage i cant say its really helped. It does look as if Audi will pick up the bill carrying on from the £4.3k i have already paid but the actual bill must be nearer £7-8k now. Had they gone straight to the problem and fixed it the book price is seven hours + parts. I am not moaning but when i see post like this thread where people say they expected premium quality, reliability and service for the money they paid i think....hmmm.....lol :)
When the guy rings Friday Lunch time and says Its 7 hours work, the car is already stripped and we hope to make a start today.....then rings the following Wednesday to say he has the parts but it dosnt look like they will get it done this week you start to think, can i believe anything he says ? I mean 7 hours ??..lol
