help - clunk noise under braking

In my 1.9 TDI avant when i apply the brakes, 3/5 of the time there is a loud metallic click or clunk sound coming from what sound like the front end somewhere. (The noise i can only compare to like when you change gear on a pushbike, the chain clunk into the next cog, only louder).

It doesnt seem to affect what the brakes are doing but the sound isnt right at all. Any ideas what this could be folks??

I had a similar noise on my avant not long after getting it, turned out to be the front control arms which on mine ultimately pointed out the fact that one of my C links was missing entirely!

I replaced all of mine so that i wouldnt have to take it all apart again some other time to replace the rest.

what was it that was wrong with the arms. I had a look underneath and gave all the arms and links a good tug but couldnt feel anything moving at all?
