As the title says had a run in with a 03 plate type r last night.
I'm happy with the result as my s3 is totally standard at the mo
It was from 3rd gear at about 50mph and I slowly pulled away.
I have a lot of respect fir the type r as I use to be a owner of one, there great car and fast if driven right.
The s3 is ten years old now and still keeping up with alot of the modern hot hatches even with carrying that fat heavy arse about! Can't wait for the mods to start to get the true protential out of her

Watch what happens when your S3 is mapped! You'll destroy a Type R completely!

erm, i have ruined a lot of type R's, but also had ones stick to me like glue and that is since ive been mapped - conclusion, if you come up against someone who can drive their type R then your unmapped S3 will most likely lose IMO - and trust me, there is nothing wrong with my car ;)

Yeah they are fast I use to have there good on a twisty road in a straight line they could match a standard s3 but once mapped that extra torque and power don't think they would stay very long

it just depends where you get them...... play to your strengths like they will subconciously do, cos if you get caught out, a mapped S3 will at the worst equal in my experience

Sandy have you outright lost on these two occasions?

No, they've got away a bit quicker, they ain't too far in front, about half a car length. I've not been up against one in ages and at the time i didn't know about turning the esp off

ESP wont make that much diff mate, the benefit they have is no lag..... a change down and go and by the time you've reacted...... best thing is to pre-empt them and take them that way, ones ive had tail me have been there ready on my ass - just depends ow much b**llocks they have and how far into the rev range they will go, eventually you will lose them, wont be straight away though

My brothers standard golf gti 180 can keep up with type r's. Twice have I seen him stick to them when I have been a passenger. Can tell they are going for it, tec + smoke is the sign to look for lol.

Never come across one in the S3. I'd be dissapointed if I got shown up...

you shouldnt get shown up by a type R as long as you are mapped, at best they will stay with you for longer than you expect, gradients dependent

The M3 is NOT a different league, really...... i have had a few plays and mid gear there really isnt much in it - as said in plenty of threads before by myself, i always wanted an M3 after the S3 due to their 'reputation' - the go's ive had against them really have put me off, they sound great, they look great but they have the same old 'BM' dash, same old RWD which is great if its permanently dry and silly running costs - safe to say i dont know what i want next given the plus's of this car

no offence to them but i found e46 m3's to be horrible...and if you get them on a track they go worse (mainly brake problems) but type r's are good fun but shouldnt be keeping up with an s3 even standard if you can drive :racer:

its not a case of if you can drive, if you have an S3 you will know that heatsoak is a big problem, that and various other factors of being caught off boost etc, and before you know it you've not pulled any ground on one of these type R's

Alpine, quite plausable matey, theres not a million miles of difference between the A3's and S3's of this world....plus your mapped arnt ya?

It surely cant be to hard an s3/a3 can it. Theres no need to rev to red line so people shouldnt get scared of using its full power, which starts to tail off at around 5500-6000 rpm i find. its mainly the heatsoak issue and boost. I think the s3's a3's can get up to something like 30% less effiecent when heatsoak has taken a full grasp.!! Even 10% and your stuffed. trying to find the table which i saw on heat soak.

Its the actual smic that gets hot, as there tucked near to the turbo or something hotlol, so the cold air coming into the smic is getting heated to what the smic is. sometimes inlet temps get to 70degrees when in full go. sticking a fmic will see temps at a constant low temp, like 40 degrees max! and in cold winters i dont think they gain at all!. every s3/a3 with smic will get heatsoak though

Close lol, it's the hot air generated by the turbo compressing it that gets the I/C hot, but the idea of an I/C is to cool the air down again, as the flow of air passes through it before it goes into the inlet manifold.

If you was to put a standard s3 against a standard type r same driver same track type r would win hands down better breaking better handling and alot less body roll

all day long. the R is alot stiffer and "sportyer" in standard form than a S3/A3. The Audis are boats in comparison.

it is but we're not disputing that, that is one of the reasons we are at a disadvantage....you can make life a lot better by fitting an FMIC as discussed a million times

Typre R versus A3/S3.....all depends, as standard yes but if you have a properly modded S3 then my money would be on that based on EsS threes S3 from a few years ago...used to take Evo's on the track because of how it was set up - but then you could say that about a lot of cars, both were built with a different purpose in mind...Type R is pure handling and speed....S3 has both plus comfort and toys, with that in mind im pretty happy with what i have when compared :)

That's the reason why I had rid of my type r horrible in side and harsh day to day driving love the luxury of the audis all the toys with speed I wouldent go back to the type r coz like you said tunning is endless power ,handling, and stoping with all the comforts

Santa Pod is a good private road,
I wouldn't trade my s3 for a type R, but having said that I know a light weight type R, that hangs around, who I can not beat top end, but low end I destroy him, purely because of the lovely traction. He has raced with a tuned e46 M3 who runs around 360, with cams etc, and they both have been neck to neck up to 160mph, my s3 has not seen above 145mph with me and that was in Germany last year, but it goes to say type R can be very quick if tuned properly.

Yup, it's a bit of a trek for me also, but whenever I get a chance I go there early Sundays. 6-8am is perfect in the summer.

It's even better on a bike, but my gixxer has now found a better home seeing as babies and bikes don't mix well :bye:
