could do with someone who knows about these things to give me a hand, it is for a banner style graphic with some text across it.

I can give you some advice... Is it work related or a personal banner. do you require animation? Is it going to be a Animated Gif or a flash file.

im not exactly great or any thing but coudl give ya hand makin one let us knwo what ya want, can do simple pics an some posh fonts..
