    Hi Guys,

After 7 years, finally traded in the A3 Quattro and upgraded to an S3 Sportback which i'm loving:

However in the drivers seat compartment I found this bad boy:

Now I want to keep my S3 standard for at least a year but was wondering whether I could use this risk free? Have been online and it mentions registering online but can I do this if I received this with the car or not? Is it not worth it as i'm not sure what map is actually on it.

    Thanks

There was a thread on here recently from someone who'd recently replaced their S3 and mentioned leaving their Bluefin unit in the car when he sold it. Can't recall who it was for the life of me :uhm:

Plug the unit in and have a fiddle. They are quite easy to use and you should be able to figure out whether you've got a stock map on or a Bluefin one.

i'll bet the reason it was was in the car was the previous owner removed the map then went for a drive then forgot to remove the bluefin device from the car, i wonder if the car has been thrashed?

    Aren't all s3's?
Well 90% of them will have been raced about in but yeah possibly it might not have been warmed up before boosting and cooled down but that is the gamble you take when buying a used car.
My car is remapped but is very well looked after the previous owner of the OP's new S3 could have been the same as me with reguards to ownership.

Thanks for all the comments guys. Only problem with car is paranoia when parking it up. Years ago the door mirrors used to get stolen from s3's. Is this still a problem?

Will def test bluefin - where is the obd port in this cr? Couldn't see it.

Re being thrashed, that's def a risk but bought Audi approved so have 1 year warranty just in case

    Hi Guys,

Have plugged the bluefin in and the car does feel different and even a bit louder when idling for some reason. Have reverted back to standard as do not want to use it during the audi warranty in case it invalidates it.

One question I have is what are the disadvantages of remapping (other than increased insurance premiums)? Apparently you get better MPG but my car is DSG and I have read that sometimes the map may not be compatible. Also is likely to wear out the components more. Something for me to think about next year.

But your car is already mapped (or is bluefin just a plug in box?) so surely in theory the warranty is already invalid if something went wrong through cause of the map regardless of whether you had it turned on at the time?

The previous owner surely ran the map ok with the DSG so should be fine...

If you want to get the best out of the map the DSG has to be mapped too as the torque limiter cuts in and doesnt give you the whole remapped power. As the mapped power output is greater than the top end on the torque limiter it has to be mapped in order to raise the torque limiter settings. Some people haven't done this and are happy to pootle around and not use the full potential. If you do want to use the full power then I suggest you look into getting the DSG mapped also.

Its a plug in box allowing you to switch between map and original.

I don't want to get into modifying so will probably not use it again as don't want to remap dsg. Is it worth me selling or would it require the new owner to re register to use on their s3?

Bluefin ECU remaps are written to get around the DSG torque limiter so you get the full power increase, so no need to have the DSG remapped too. REVO is the same.
It was only the original shark remaps which required the DSG to be remapped as well, but even they now offer a tweaked ECU map to get around the DSG torque limit.

Shark have 2 options for the DSG.....as you say its embedded in the ECU remap which is a work around. The best way fwd is to get the DSG mapped also. This is the best option.

To the OP - I'd recommend you keep the Bluefin map on and see the Audi warranty in perspective.

I have the Bluefin map on my S3 and have been to my local Audi franchise five times this year; once for a service and four times as part of resolving an issue with the front suspension (cracked spring). There were no issues with my S3 having a remap.

I imagine the situation you are thinking of is where there is some catastrophic failure with the engine or transmission, perhaps where Audi would refuse a warranty claim due to the remap? I may learn to eat my hat in a very expensive exception to the rule, but I don't think that situation is likely to occur.

I would encourage you to think of a) how likely it is that an S3 would have such a failure in the first place and b) how likely Audi would be to refuse the warranty claim, which would almost certainly be for something not governed by remapped software? The local Audi franchise would probably be happy that the work was coming their way and, with a Bluefin, you would almost certainly have the opportunity to return to the standard map in about 5-10 minutes if you were worried.

You may also know that remapping firms usually offer their own warranty against such a situation (although it would be interesting to see it enforced).

Finally, my Bluefin map has really "made" my S3. If I were in your situation, I'd register the unit with Superchips and, if required, pay a little for the transfer of the above-mentioned additional warranty.

If the bluefin device is indeed for your car when you plug it in it will inform you that t has paired and then ask if you want to poceed, Bluefin maps are very conservative and the car will not only be quicker but more efficient, I'd use it without a doubt.

Just because a car has been mapped doesn't really mean its had a harder life than standard especially with more power and torqe at lower rpm its less likely to have been ragged beyond the first few weeks of honeymoon period when first installed. My car has been mapped for all of its 19,000 miles and is so well cherished I think it would stand up to any mechanical inspection.

Stop being paranoid and get enjoying your lovely car, its a beauty :)

Hi guys - I bought my S3 last July and it came with a bluefin unit. I didn't bother installing it as my insurance wouldn't cover me but its now time for renewal.

Just installed it and have a couple of queries
    1. Is it normal when floored in S mode that there is a slight hesitation between the gears? Not massive but not as smooth as original remap on some gears. Maybe it's something that will disappear as used.
    2. My turbo now whistles when the pedal is floored - is that normal?
    Thanks

Gear changes should be just as smooth as they were before the remap. How much of a hesitation are you talking about?

My turbo whistles without a remap. Don't they all??

Cheers. It was a lot smoother today - maybe the car just needed to get used to it having more power. Is a much better drive and is blistering in S mode.

Was concerned about whistle as its a lot more audible now but perhaps in the past was only this loud at higher speeds and the road noise drowned it out.

Just need to find a 4WD rolling road around Leeds to test the power.

You will notice a lot more induction noise, and noise from the turbo,as it's being pushed a lot harder, and at Stg2+,it's right at the edge of it's map.
