My normal route was changed for country roads as the M1 had bad traffic, and before I knew it, the MPG was mid 40's in sport mode. So I popped it into efficiency mode and got 50mpg for the last 20 mins.

The 50mph speed limit on the road I was on tells me this is the best speed for fuel economy. I normally get 42mpg on motorway cruising.

Did you reset the short-term memory to get this or was it the MPG for the whole trip? If the latter, that would be fantastic!

Or were you cheating and reading off an instantaneous figure? ;) Good for an immediate feel-good buzz nevertheless.

For the trip till just over an hour. It involved passing through villages and built up areas but mostly it was country roads limited to 50mph. I then hit M1 and increasing speed above 50mph just goes south of 50. My trips usually do 42mpg

I have 2800 miles on the clock now and have seen steady improvment in MPG, started at 36 and slowly increased to 42 then 46 and on a recent run down the M6 got 51. The best speed appears to be about 65 mph, at 55 you loose 8th gear as its 50.2/1000rpm. I think with a few more thousand miles under its belt it might do 55 on a run and in economy mode. By the way all figs are driving in dynamic mode, I like the exhaust note, and around town i easily get 36-38mpg which I think is pretty good for a 3.0Bitdi. My Jaguar XF 3.0Bitdi only gave me 28 around town and a best of 42 on a run.

I can't see the BiTDI doing 55mpg tbh; without driving like you're on a fuel efficiency test anyway. Efficiency mode is the only one that engages coasting (to my knowledge), critical for good fuel efficiency.

Are you reading figures from the DIS or using an app like fuelly? I know the DIS over reads, mine is about 8% out, it is showing 37mpg but really I am getting 34mpg.

The figs are off the on board computer, so yes they could be out. When I reach 3000 miles I intend to do a 1000 mile check mileage against actual fuel purchased so that I can have an average which I can compare with the on board long term memory.

Yeah it usually is out but even if it is about 8% then you are still looking at 46 which is good.
I forgot to add I have the SQ5 so my fuel consumption is never going to be as good as you guys but it is getting better, done almost 6k miles so far. Best I have had on a run is 42mpg.

Audi claim 51.4 as maximum / best MPG and my DIS stops improving the MPG at around 50.4 over a long distance run on mostly motorway in efficiency mode. It would make sense the DIS is slightly out, but relative to other cars, it's still good.

The SQ5 has the same engine, but drag is higher and it's heavier. That said, it's a perfect engine for an SUV given the very high torque. I would expect to see more of these engines and triple turbo'd versions coming into the Q7 and future Q cars. BMW already do.

Would love to see a version of the BiTDI in the A4 Avant - think that would be a killer combination and think we will see that in the next A4, whilst they add the TriTDI to the A6. I actually think it would make such a fast S3, if diesel prejudices in sports cars weren't at play.
