Hi all, does anyone know any good bodyshops for full resprays? I've had a couple of quotes for around 1k but I'm finding it hard to find any evidence/reviews on the work that they've done. Thanks!

Sorry that would help, I'm based in the London area but am willing to commute for a couple of hours if the quality of a particular place is good.

A grand? Including all the prep? Sounds very dodgy, £2k is the going rate for a decent job.

I've come to the conclusion high cost doesn't always guarantee a top notch job.

My car cost me £2,300 for a colour change and B5 RS4-widebody conversion, including door shuts, luggage area, under the hood, as well as the all important and time consuming aspect of grafting in genuine B5 RS4 rear quarters, and of course, prepwork.

The windows were also tinted, and Gary put the car back together too. All I did was remove the old doors, bumpers and bootlid.

And, he done an excellent job, Docurley used him for his old B5 RS4-widebody too, and the job was spot-on too.

I came across this topic on here earlier:

    http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/showthread.php?p=685178

I gave this guy a call and he said £1000, and If I'm not satisfied I dont pay etc etc . Anyawy, there seems to be mixed feelings on this guy so I don't really want to take a punt at it.

Well I asked for a full respray quote, but he did ask the current colour of the car. I have no idea how these guys operate but I would have thought the current colour was irrelevant if they were to do a full respray (as it involves stripping down the current colour anyway)...hmmm

He's right to ask what the current color is, as different paints have different prices.

And no, the current paintwork doesn't need to be stripped down, just rubbed down, and primered.

You only go bare metal, if you're undertaking a bare metal respray, and there's the likelihood of non-localised body rot, or a classic / concourse car.

With a galvanised bodyshell, you don't want the paint taken down to bare metal - invariably, the galvanised finish is removed, and that's what you don't want.

out of curiosity, whats a fair price for painting a boot lid, and the bumpers? i see £200 mentioned - but that sounds like one hell of a lot! just want a bench mark for when im asking around.

I was quoted £200 to repaint a front bumper with some scuffs in it, so I assume that includes labour for sanding, filling, sanding, priming, painting. I didnt ask how much it would be if I did all the work prior to paint.

My advice - never do your own prepwork, unless you're a qualified body repair specialist, which would mean you'll be painting too.

If you prep your parts yourself, and just pay for paint, if it turns out not to your liking, you couldn't blame the bodyshop. They'll just say it's your prepwork. So, never give them any excuse to wriggle out of doing any rectification work.

I also suspect that most good 'shops would tell you that straight up front, and probably even refuse to do the work, unless they did the prep, unless they knew you or something.

I'm sure they'll all have been stung in the past by just that, someone doing the prep, it turning out shit and then having a big fight on their hands about blame etc.

Gary at Chappell Coachworks is your man, based up at Brands Hatch, Kingdown.

He does all my cars and as stated he did mine and Siena's RS4 conversion which quite a few people have seen here and he also did my MR2 Ferrari conversion not to mention all the other cars he has done for me.

He's fair and will not rip you off and his work is excellent

His number is 01474 855503 just tell him David with the Audi sent you.

I was quoted £200+ for the bootlid alone. I asked how much it would cost to take a couple of scuffs out of the bumpers as well and it came to over £450 inc. VAT.

Although that's from the bodyshop currently doing the UK's latest widebody S4 in lovely Avus Silver.

Thanks for your help guys. Docurley, I gave Gary a call, top bloke! Although he couldn't give me an exact price without seeing it the price he gave was around 3k (I believe that was for spraying the engine bay also).

I'm not sure that I can justify spending that for a respray just yet but perhaps he can do it for a bit cheaper if he sees it.
