Glove compartemt nightmare

The lever (handle) of the glove compartment has come off and despite nothing being broken (that I can see) I can not get the thing back together.
I have the handle the metal rod (90 degree bends on both ends) and the plastic mechanism part.
I just can not get the thing back together to operate properly. All the bits seem to be in the right place, but no joy.
Anyone come accross this before??
