On my way home just now, i noticed second gear was whining, sounded sort of like when you are going reverse. Then later on, third started aswell. Car drives like it always does and pulls nicely. The whining stops when you let go of the throttle, and comes back the instant you touch it.

Should i be worried, and are my gearbox done? Oil changed around 1000 miles ago.

First of all, I would check the oil level in it ASAP when it has settled.

Diff bearings are the most likely cause, whining when accelerating means too tight, whining when on over run means too loose. You'll probably find that the diff bearings are worn. Mine have been like it for the last 4000 miles; Prawns gearbox wined in first and second for the best part of 2 years.

It could be the case hardening on the gears wearing away; but this tends to happen with extreme heat when little "pockets" of oil actually explode on the teeth under high pressure. Only seen this a couple of times though.

As advised, drop the oil and check for swarf. If it looks like this -

Then say goodbye to your gearbox.

Fit a new box if it bothers you; personally I would be driving it until it can be driven no more.

Boxes can be had for £80 upwards, fitting is 4 hours so expect to pay £200 ish.

Im afraid mechanics charge ALOT more here. When i convert my currency into gbp, its around 120 an hour. Gearboxes around 250. How the hell can you get a gearbox for 80 pounds -_-

My gearbox is whining also, I've been told that the bearings have gone in mine and the diff is knackered making the car pull to the left hard, but as klappe said can be got cheaply, I'm going to be buying one for £100

Metal swarf from a failing diff bearing.

Still got the same bearing in it, just with new oil. I've decided to drive it until it cannot be driven, it could blow up tomorrow, or it could last years. Who knows.

my car sounds like those 1.4 tsi engines with turbo and supercharger. And not in a good way, the whining is kind of loud, but i have had gearbox issues for like a year, where i would get clonking noises when i switched into second and third. Will get it looked at soon.

Had a small look under the car. The underside is covered in what smells like burned oil. How can that in any way get under there? There was also a minor pool on the ground.

There are also some holes with sharpish edges i am not sure are suppose to be there. They are where the gearbox lines up with the rest of the block. The oil appears to come from that general area.

sorry about the awful pictures, cant get under there. I have an appointment at a gearbox shop in the end of July, just wondering if its safe to drive the thing?

Engine oil level is fine, so i am assuming its gearbox oil, but how would it get out from the gearbox? :(

Yep, gearbox is definetly done. Differential has knocked a giant hole in it, which would explain why i smelled oil, and why the underside of thee block was smeared in oil. The shop, which is a specialist shop VW sends boxes to, said they were suprised it wasnt causing more issues. Clutch, done. They also said the 5 speed manuals are weak, and cannot handle extra power. Well the car only has a remap and a full exhaust. I already knew the 5 speed were sort of weak, but should be able to handle 220 hp?

**** me this is gonna be expensive.

Mine whines in 2nd. Always thought about fitting the 8p s3 gearbox? I remember a post on another forum showing the differences between the two and there wasn't a great deal between them?

I certainly dont when it comes to cars. Not even gonna try adding up the costs of repairs for the last year in my head, ill just get massively depressed and end up buying a Toyota or Honda, aka a reliable car.

    8L's are incredibly reliable.

Unless they are sheds, then they are money pits.

My current is on 125k, NEVER broken down or failed once.

My last had done 197k and had never had the head off it. Was beautiful.

I have been around 1.8t's for a fair while, and IMO they can be very reliable given the right care.

Im pissed to say the least.

Long story short, i've had transmission problems for a long time, and eventually i found the entire underside of the car splashed with gearbox oil, so i had it checked at a shop, and they found a big hole in it.

They replaced the hole box, and clutch, but the problem is, the transmission does not feel "new". It still makes the same slight knock (which i thought was the gearbox dogbone, so i got an ESC one, didnt help) when i go into second, and i can still feel the shifter "scrape" something when i go into first, and third. Sometimes, when i go neutral, like rolling up to a light, and want to go into first, the shifter is stuck halfway, and just wont go anywhere before i go neutral and back into first.

I brought it up when i received the car, but the guy said it was the syncros. I was under the impression that syncros would be new aswell, since its a brand the gearbox costing a small fortune. I thought it was suppose to be smooth as butter?

New clutch, new box, what can the issue be then?
