Lukcy for me I realised the slot was there straight away because I couldn't believe you were supposed to dangle it!

What I do find is that when filling up with diesel I have to do it REALLY slowly otherwise the pump keeps clicking off, does my head in!

The reason UK pump nozzles don't have (or at least they are not supposed to have) the little clips that america has for example which let you leave the pump running without you holding on to the nozzle is that it prevents static discharge.

If in America (and there are a few clips on youtube of this happening) you set the pump running, have a walk around the forecourt and build up some static (or the car builds up static due to the fuel being poured in or whatever) then come back and touch the nozzle handle there could be a spark. Whereas the UK nozzle design forces you to to hold onto the lever which guarantees that a potential difference can't build up between you, the nozzle or the car and so much reduces the risk of a spark / fire. In other words its like that for a reason...

More relevant to petrol fillups than diesel right enough!

I've been driving A3 8Ps for 9 years now (on my third) and I've always just let it dangle :)

I just tried that but my cap won't fit over the hinge (I've got a 2012 model...)

I dropped a pound whilst filling up the other day, and whilst picking it up I sprayed a pounds worth of momentum over the wing and myself. Before I went in to pay I popped open the boot, grabbed 2 microfibres and the quick detailer. Job done, OCD satisfied.

I tried to do this, but the rubber lead is not long enough. Have you cut yours?

Just tested it, and this definitely works on my 2012 2.0TDI A3. Not 100% sure I'll be able to get the pump into the tank without knocking it, but it fits on the hinge.

That's really weird.... my hinge is quite thick (approx 5mm at elast) and the gap on the cap is way too thin...

It took me a second as I got the angle slightly wrong first time - did you definitely try to along the right two notches? If you try to go across rather than along one side they don't line up properly.

Try a different position on the cap, mine sometimes feels like it won't fit, perhaps the cap is symmetrical!

    :lmfao: WTF?

I just tried mine agian with a bit mroe patience and found it does fit over the hinge but only at an angle, so only one slot actually slips on, but that'll do for me :beerchug:

Haha. This thread is mint! The flap thing has been doing my head in. I couldn't believe that the cap is supposed to be clipped to the paintwork of the door.

I've just had a play, and discovered that mine does the same as yours. It will fit on the hinge, but only one slot and at an angle. It saves the paintwork on the flap door, though. Result. :)

Good design is supposed to solve problems for people and be intuitive for the user.

This is none of those things lol.

The cap on the hinge isn't the offical AUDI way though, but it works better than the method in the handbook which is a bit odd as they expect you to hang it over the exterior painted part of the fuel flap!

There's a challenge for the OCD. Do you do it the way that is better or do you follow the manual  ?

I'm a bit worse than that, even if a dribble of diesel goes down the side of the car I use the water intended for the windscreen to wash it off (poured, not using the scabby sponge). Diesel doesn't go well with white paintwork :(

I must be a right muppet because I can not get it to rest on the hinge! I'll try the 1 slot idea now.

    What's a manual?

I've been wondering this since I got the car, going as far as to moan to my girlfriend "so much for Audi build quality and attention to detail, my VXR had a slot to hold the cap!"

If it doesn't fit on your hinge just spin the cap round there are 3 or 4 slots in it. One of them will fit.

Another way to do it without having to fiddle around with anything is to put the nozzle in and then just rest the cap on top of the nozzle. Easy.

I've been messing with mine earlier - pumping £80 worth of diesel into the tank really takes a while :(

The cap doesn't go on with every combination of slots - they must be cut in a rectangle, if you will... if it doesn't work, turn the cap 90 degrees and try again, and it's a bit of a tight fit.

I feel mildly retarded after filling up my car probably 250+ times and always thinking that the Germans managed to get so many pieces of "attention to detail" all in one car, but then failed to address something so simple (by leaving it dangling)

Who'd have thought that the instruction manual could be so useful

    Cheers guys!

Not as retarded as I felt, I've been holding mine between my arse cheeks rather than scratch the paint work :jump:
