Very true Paul, and that's part of my point. I love the Audi to bits, but i'm paying a premium for it to do exactly the same thing as my Ford

Right now, my house comes 1st, so the Ford will have to do. My point was that depsite everyone thinking that Audi is the best thing sinced sliced bread, Ford seem to have made something which is equally (in my opinion of course) pleasurable to own and drive

Agree, if you look at the nuts and bolts, functionality, and cost then FORD is probably the more sensible purchase.

haha well im used to working on mercs so i geuss it just makes sense but i meant more for things like doing the timing belt. i can think of several examples that have required more strip to do the job for service parts

i could just be used to working on audis now as its all i work on (cant afford 2 cars :()

tbh i have to agree with you on it, the build quality of audi has recently been swirled in the shitter, not so sure of the newer ones though

I am inclined to agree with Paul...as seems to happen rather a lot these days :)
You could pay a fortune to get Elly Macpherson.....but would she be any better than Cheryl Cole ? Lets face it, just like your car they will be knackerd in 10 years anyway :) would Cheryl give you a better ride? would Elly be more reliable ? Has either got more toys ? Would either give you more satisaction after a good thrashing ?
The answer is both have their merrits, its horses for courses.

My 2p :)...Or have i lost the plot here. ?

Well, where do i start. Ferrari : Cam belts every 2,000 miles! Whats that all about? Anyone who has owned a ferrari knows one thing, it will at some point breakdown. Have you ever heard of a Ferrari doing 100,000 miles? Never ever.
Comparible Porsche 997, will do way in excess of that without ever breaking down.
As for a Nissan, they have the crapiest build quality known to man.
Aston Martin are as they have always been, parts bin specials. Go & pay £120k for an Aston, rip the leather cover off the key & it will say Volvo underneath! How impressive is that for your money.
As for bentley, well Paddy hate to tell you this. I get the impression that you are still in the dark ages. So sorry to spoil your impression of British engineering, but bentley is now owned by VW, which you might find is GERMAN.
Audi`s are good, bloody good. Sounds like you have the wrong car though, to ever think that they are good.
Get your hand in your pocket & buy a Mondeo, then please go & frequent a Ford Forum.
    Because you know nowt.

My A3 has random knocks and vibrations when driving and its less than a year old. Drove a friends Astra (2010 model) and it felt impressive. Wouldn't tell the difference if i closed my eyes

The Audi slogan of build quality is now a myth, the competition has caught up and even surpassed in some areas

lol, well written P, you dreaming again lol. Question is, could you keep up? Least you'd be smiling trying eh!

I'm not entering into the debate on better makes etc etc but I do know that all the VWs ive owned were more reliable than the few Audis ive had. Maybe I just had a few duff ones but I came back because I love them, simple as that.

Another blinkered view I see. Paddy is right, for those that think German cars are the best there is are, and I quote, living in the dark ages.

I've had the pleasure of a owning a few German marques, and whilst I like them, I would never describe them as the most reliable for certain, in fact the biggest money pit i've ever owned was German.

The most reliable cars i've had were Japanese without a shadow of a doubt, it's a fact. That doesn't of course make them "better" than a German car, far from it, because they lack in other areas, their style dates quickly, they use cheaper plastics in the cabin, the paint is not as robust, and they do tend to lack character (mind you saying that my Audi right now has as much character as a sheet of white A4 paper).

If cars were pefect in all areas then it would be pretty boring. Audi are not pefect, and they are not the best, they are just very good at some things.

Best car i ever had was French ! Peugeot 406 coupe V6.. when it worked i loved it but unfortunately i didn’t often work. I kept it for its 2 year guarantee and sold it quick. In 2 years/30k miles it had 18 coil packs ! I radiator, Exhaust, 2 engine mounts, I ECU, the heated seat packed up, Speedo, Cruise packed up and finally the cable in the driver’s seat snapped so you couldn’t tilt the seat to get anyone in the back. I was quoted £250 to re upholster the seat and fit the cable…..so I sold it. But to drive and cruise distances it was the best ! I could drive that 10 hours in a day and get out and not even stretch. It was just supremely comfortable and had every gadget possable as standard including Brembo brakes J

Your not selling to me mate....

    While we are off topic....

If you are REALLY brave, 12K gets you a stunning 10yr old Masser 3200, Ive been looking at these on PH (in moments of madness) then I bumped into a mate at the weekend who has just bought one. A lovely looking thing and properly FAST! went out as a passenger and was pinned in the seat. Sounds sweet too.
Go on Paddy, I dare you!

Got to be rough for that cash? Saying that my mates picked up a Bentley GT Conti with 115k on it for 27k Its a beaut for the cash but 115k on a W8 can only lead to serious expense!

1.6 Focus (bog standard i presume) in comparison to a 2.2 Mondeo ST

    That's like comparing a 1.6 A3 to a 2.0TDI A4 S-Line.....

    2 completely different cars N8

The guy has a wider agenda Nath hence the loss of his Audi. I think he's got a very good point, there really is nothing wrong with a Mondeo, and there is life after Audi, don't be so small minded.

To be fair, and back to the title thread...... Are fords on par with Audi?? And more importantly.. 'like for like' similar class models............

    Nope. Not imo.

in what respect though? Thats the difficulty in answering this question straight, as a luxury brand, no they're not, in overall terms of value for money, then probably yes I think.

It is difficult (impossible) giving a straight answer to this. It all comes down to your own experiences with cars/brands.

I've heard people slagging off Peugeot's reliabilty etc, but I owned a 206 GTi for almost 8 years and the most that needed doing was an exhaust change. It was bullet proof.

Having driven both A3's and Focus's.... the A3 is a "better" car. Feels more solid, looks better, inside more comfortable, etc etc.
Haven't experience a Mondeo or A5, but i'm guessing the A5 would feel like a better all round car.

And how do you substantiate or define "value for money".
Value for money for some people could be owning a car that costs less to service/repair etc, and for other's it could be purely the feeling of driving something with more "prestige".
It's all down to what the individual sees as "value".

But all of that is only in my opinion, and I'm guessing someone else will come along and say the exact opposite.
But as it's our own opinions we'll both be right.

Ok the title says "Ford on par with Audi" I was saying IMO, from MY EXPERIENCE I would never buy a ford over an audi. As they are miles off in every department.

    My point of view.

You will notice that my comments were re: the Mondeo not the KIa or fiesta or focus....The Mondeo is in a class of its own against other fords. This idea that someone knew a guy who worked for a mate in the 60s and he drove a Ford Corsair and it wasn’t very good so all Fords are **** is silly. The Focus is OK for the money and if you feel a A3 is worth £10k more then that’s fine by me but the Mondeo is pitched against the A4 and IMHO its right up there with it in design and ride, engine performance and handling. A 2ltr s-line A4 will cost you £32k + extras so call it £35k the Mondeo Titanium X is £12k cheaper with all the extras as std. There is nothing wrong with paying the Extra for the Audi, lets face it most of already have as Audi owners but is the A4 £12k better than a Mondeo....?? not really .

If we are talking VFM should we not talk about resale and residuals?
Ok the Ford may be cheap when new but worth two thirds of **** all come trade in time.

And we shouldnt forget(again) the diminishing return issue neither.

Asking if the A4 is worth 12K more than the MOndeo because it ticks the same boxes is like asking if the 911 Turbo is worTH 50K more than a Datsun err I mean NISSAN GTR ?
I doubt PORSCHE or 911 owners really care that the NISSAN has same/similar attributes.

In fact, comparing `standard` product or brand to a `premium` or luxury item is a pretty hollow debate.
There simply isnt a linear equation that proves whether a car is VFM compared to another.

By admission, the OP bought a Ford Mondeo because his circumstances dictated so, not because it was his first choice of car.
As a tool its VFM but not in the desirability stakes, and thats hard, if not impossible, to quantify and varies from person to person.

A MONDEO simply would not represent VFM to me, as its not a car a wish to drive everyday. So even if it was 5K to buy, it would still be 5K`s worth of something I didnt want.

    cheers
    Paul

And that there is why we'll never all agree on the "on par'ness" of the two manufacturers... all summed up in the hard casing of an almond/pecan/pistachio/etc.

4 years ago at the age of 17 I learnt to drive in a Focus 1.6. Personally thought it was a joy to drive and the reason I passed my driving test and only took 6 (2hr) lessons! Can't comment on any other fords, but if they were that sh!t there wouldn't be so many of them on the road. All to your own likes & dis-likes.

Oh and smudge_don all the best in regards to saving for a house etc.

ford are good cars there is no denying it for the price they are, would i own one............... nope but that is down to personal preference, ill ownly drive an Audi(or german i.e VAG) as its my personal preference, for the money you get alot better build quality inside and out, i have detailed fords and the amount of times that the bumpers or headlights dont sit right or are just loose reminds me why i drive audi. all cars have their problems even if you had an R8 or super super car after all they are machines with working movable parts and things(physics) happen so someone might be lucky with one car and then someone might have a bad one so every one to their own, i own my S4 for exclusivity as not many around with my spec on it so my car car is quite rare and thats why i like it, dont get me wrong sometimes i just wish i wasnt like i am as owning a little fiesta or focus would save me a hell of ALOT of money on my S4 but my car is amazing and wouldnt trade it in for any ford even the RS as ive seen more RS focus than ive seen S4 in my area. as for the thread title, no ford are not on par with Audi but i think they are the best lower specced car manufacturer around, id own a ford over the vauxhall, citroen, peggy etc you get the drift.

just my 2p but im biased as ill only own Audi's
