On my way to work this morning my mil light came on, when I checked it with my code reader it said, PO172 system over rich bank one, does anyone have any idea what it means and what the cause could be, I cleared the code, then went for a blast and all is well, thanks for any help.

I had this, my mate come out with vag com asked me where I'd bin, told him work then petrol station, he cleared code went to my fuel cap tighten it a click then said there sorted and light not bin back n since, this was 2 weeks ago.

Thanks for that, funny enough, I got petrol the night before, I just went out and tightened my cap a few clicks too, just have to wait and see what happens now, cheers.

16556/P0172 - System Too Rich, Bank 1
Possible Symptoms

Irregular behaviour

Possible Causes

Fuel system
Excessive fuel pressure
Leaking or contaminated fuel injectors
Leaking fuel pressure regulator
Low fuel pressure or running out of fuel
Vapor recovery system
Air leaks after the MAF
Vacuum leaks
Improper seated engine oil dipstick
Stuck EGR valve
Oil overfill
Cam timing
Cylinder compression
Exhaust leaks before or near HO2Ss.

Seen this before on BAM engined S3's... what year is your car?

In the cases I have seen the rubber fuel hoses rot and the 'stuff' collects in the FPR giving increased fuel pressure and thus the too rich fault code...
