failed thermostat - inline replacement?

hi all, i have a 2.5 tdi audi a4 b5 and the thermostat has failed, i am not prepared to take apart the whole front end of the car but am aware of inline mods that can be done, i am pretty sure my top radiator hose wont accept a thermostat from a renault 5 or volvo 340 as it is not big enough, so can someone point me in the right direction for an inline housing unit that will do the job? or is there a 28mm diameter thermostat out there that could fit inside my hose?

aragorn have you done this mod? if so where do you buy the parts from/

No, but paul has, i believe he got the housing from some sort of mini website, its linked in the second post above.

thank you, have sent them an email, trying to cheap the cost as low as possible but my fuel economy is really taking a hit so needs sorting... many thanks for your help
