Hi guys, have an exhaust dilemma on my hands... :)
Car warranty going out in two months and I started gathering parts and ideas for upgrades. The exhaust (cat back) being one of the first things, I looked at Milltek but it seems they stopped making the SSXAU316 (as I could not find a single shop able to supply it). Then I looked at SuperSprint and fell in love with the central Y pipe + rear pipes (w/o mufflers).
Was under the impression that the DPF itself would tame the sound enough for everyday use.
And then, chatting with one of SS engineers raised some concerns: he said it would be still legal on the road but the sound would be "too aggressive". As I'm doing some very long motorway journeys, I cannot have my ears bleeding all the time!
Looking for my answers across the net, the only thing I could find is that DPF does a great job of silencing everything. Is this guy just too conservative? I would not fancy installing just the end pipes. On the other hand, are there other options that I'm missing?

You could find the system off a BiTDI which has valves in the exhaust and opens up in certain conditions. Coupled together with something like a Kufatec Sound Generator

Alternatively find an exhaust place which can build a system with active valves in

AFAIK the bitdi doesn't have the flaps of the petrol cars, the noise is nice (for a diesel) but completely fake and comes from sound generators/speakers in the exhaust which can be switched on or off in ADS whenever you fancy.

The kufatec is a bit like putting a graphic equaliser in before your hifi amp, it lets you to play with the factory noise level/tone and has 6 presets, a couple are very loud and, unless you like scaring grannies and small children, bordering on ridiculous. Fortunately (for me) you can tweak the newer ones with a laptop to get the noise of your choice.

Retrofitting the bitdi exhaust would be an interesting project but would probably entail a fair fit of work and expense? I'm sure Kufatec did an active system with sound generator for about £1K because I looked into getting one for my cabby after hearing the SQ5. Unfortunately I can't find it, this 'normal' system is the only one I see on their site now.

Ah perhaps it's just the sound generator then. I did see a complete system for sale on Ebay a few months back from a BiTDi; that was about £600 mind!!

I think an exhaust specialist could knock something up for a similar price :)

Thanks guys. My initial idea was to "free things up" and derestrict the flow. Not a big fan of adding the artificial noise when the V6 itself is capable of doing a cracking job. Will explore the route of local specialists to see if they can fabricate something...

I think this is what I must have been looking at, not the full system I thought, just the active bit, looks like you chop the exhaust and weld the sound generator in. The SQ5 has 2 of these so would get pretty expensive for sound effects only and no increase in performance.

I'll be interested to know what you go for, I'd like my cabby to sound a bit less tractorlike:grimacing:

The noise from exhaust systems is all very subjective. The combination of the turbo and DPF / CAT makes a pretty effective silencer.
If you had a 2.5 inch electric cutout installed on the standard exhaust you would get more noise when you wanted it and at the press of a button back to normal. This is the noise mine makes with a gutted DPF.

This is a 3 inch kit but a custom exhaust place could fit this on a standard exhaust system.

You could just try out the exhaust and see how much louder it would be with a valve. You can split the exhaust system with the collar on the centre pipe. It wouldn't be too difficult to temporarily split the pipe and support the pipe end so you get an idea of how loud it is.
