I was driving in weekend heavy traffic and suddenly noticed that my exhaust got louder. Noise is obviously coming from the engine side and not the muffler end.
Almost as if there is suddenly a hole somewhere.

Car is idling fine, power seems there, just much louder and certainly does not sound right.

    Car was serviced on Thursday.

Any suggestions of what I could check before I can get it to the mechanic?
Will plugging into VCDS be of any help?

Most likely an exhaust leak somewhere, I would think.

Most likely to be an exhaust gasket blowing somewhere near the manifold/downpipe or even a pin sized hole in the pipe somewhere. The downpipe is usually situated just behind the dash, does that seem to be where the noise is coming from or is it further back like under the front seats? Can you smell any acidy/eggy type fumes at all? I've heard the S3 (especially the earlier 8L) are known for downpipes blowing. Get it checked over and let us know how you got on.
