ESP/ABS Fault, when it feels like it!!

HI Peeps.
(58 Sportback TDI 170)
The last week or so, I have had ESP/ABS Fault! Flag up on the display, along with both yellow warning lights. However, after about 5-10 mins they clear themselves.
If I took the car for a check, would the warning have to be showing for the diagnostics to detect the fault?
It is very annoying although it has only done it 3 times. I hate knowing my car has an under lying problem somewhere.
Any help appreciated.

The fault should be logged mate, get it scanned see what pops up

Thanks mate, wanted to make sure that it would pick the fault up even without it showing on the dash/display.
Didn't want to waste a trip and £££

Get on the VCDS map see if a local user to you can sort you out?
