Engine Swaps

My 170Tdi decided to shatter a piston ring and kill cylinder 4 on new years eve. So now i'm stuck with an a4 that doesn't work, i want to get it back on the road asap but i'm struggling to find a replacement engine that won't cost me an arm and a leg. What other cars came with the 170 tdi and would they fit?

I know they came in an a3, an a6 and im sure they came in a passat, could they possibly be dropped in and work, maybe with an ecu swap or something? I want to get it back on the road so I can sell the temp car i'm using. Plus ive found a cheap a6 with that engine in and it has low miles.

Can I ask how and why it shattered a piston ring lack of oil or???

Tbh, I have not the foggiest idea why it did it. The head is bettered and so is the piston, I haven't got the engine out yet to do a full strip down but will post back once I have. Just need someone to clarify if the A6 2.0 tdi will fit the A4!
