Sorry to hear about you joining the oil club, what you have said is pretty much standard so I believe, I've been arguing the toss with Audi UK now for a while and all they say is it is at the dealers discretion and good will. My car has FSH with Audi. My Pistons and Con Rods being replaced is going to cost £1900, I had that reduced from just over £5000. As someone has said to me, it is pretty generous of the dealer considering I didn't get the car from them. In my little head I believe it should be the Head office who over rule everything and honour it all as goodwill but apparently not! Just make the promises that you are going to continue to maintain the car with that particular Audi dealers and wonder if there is any movement on it. You've just had the great expense of buying a trusted brand with Full Service history and mention you have been reading up on the fault and are aware that there is an issue with this particular issue.

Just a thought with your quote: £2400 + 30% = £3120 full price. I have an invoice here for 1 hours labour at £162 p/h, £162 into £3120 = around 20 hours work. You are basically getting a labour rate of £120 p/h by my working out. I would have thought there would be movement in that.

I am still in my first part of the oil consumption test, I've done 487 miles and have no idea how the light hasn't come on yet, I have a tiny little bar on the MMI.

He did say 20 hours for the job. I'm tempted to just trade it in to BMW really. But I love the car. What worries me is that if I go ahead and get the work done then it's just inviting further problems down the line ..... Mine managed 270 miles before oil came of for consumption test

I know exactly where you are coming from, I have had the same thoughts. I have thought of getting rid but I just love the car too much! BMW's are just so boring inside! ;o)

Did you have the Crank Shaft Oil Seal, Engine Breather and Software update as well on the first part of the test?

The reassuring thing is that once the pistons have been done it does seem to rectify the problem so I believe. What mileage has your car done? Any smoke from the exhaust?

I am only one person and I am going through the same as you, I'd wait to see if anyone else in the forum can offer any advise / opinions.

I can't make you decide to get the work done but I have had no issues since the repair on mine. Having full history did help me but I still had to pay a contribution. I got a few preventative items replaced like the water pump and all aux belts and paid 1800. Car has 77k now and runs better than when I got it on 50k. I be running it to at least 100k and maybe more.

    Hi,

first part was consumption only no work, they said pistons and con rods straight away. I've got 49k on clock but no smoke. I really think the audis are better but I'm struggling to bring myself to pay for this. So disappointed really in audi.

    See what happens I suppose

A4B8 cheers, did ur fuel consumption alter? Glad you've had no bother since, if Audi could come down below 2 grand that would ease the pain. In gonna mull it over. Told audi I would do it in January so got some time. But I do really like the car, better than Bmw

My fuel consumption appears to be better. On average I get 450-500 miles between fill ups. I'm mainly motorway and uncongested roads. Cruise control and stick to 70 the DIS computer averages about 44mpg. It's low 30s around town.

I haggled with the dealer to get mine to 1800. I have been a customer with them for a while which again helped but to get the work done foc went on deaf ears. I know it should be free like the USA but as the uk doesn't have as a lemon law equivalent I had to way up what I was offered considering the car was out of warranty and that no agencies haven't implemented a mandatory recall. Needless to say if this work ever does become free to all customers in the future I have kept all receipts and will be seeking reimbursement.

Jackie, I think you should try and play the system a bit, ask to speak to the service manager at the dealers, be persistent, don't feel cheeky, but don't be rude, whilst talking to them just keep that thought in the back of your mind how this is your money and your car you've spent a lot of your hard earned cash on. Say how unbelievably disappointed you are that you now find out that this issue is a well known fault on this model with the piston rings. How you believe a car like an Audi shouldn't have issues like this. You bought it as it was a trusted brand so you thought, You plan on keeping the Audi service history with them and wanted to maintain it as best as possible. Mention how you've saved and spent a lot of money on this car and ask if they would be willing to reduce the bill to ie.£1900. Say how you have read up a little in forums and mention Pistons shouldn't need replacing on a car with only 49k miles on. (Actually isn't that still within a warranty?).

So I believe, dealers have flexibility in what they charge, keep trying, if you fail with the dealers, try Audi Uk again. Pull those harp strings!!

if you google your 2.0t fsi oil consumption and visit other forums as well from around the world, have a read, make some notes and you will see, it all boils down to the same issue and Audi won't recall as it is not a safety issue. It only seems to be on models 2008/9 - 2010 (I think) because Audi have now rectified the problem but never admit it and have a procedure they follow. So we now get free parts if we are lucky enough with an Audi service history and we complain enough, it is all part of their 'goodwill'.

One option might be worth trying, call the dealers the car was last serviced at (check your log book), tell them Audi Uk have said they will pay for the parts and explain what is going on with your local dealers and ask how much would they be able to do it for.

Sorry to waffle on, I am just really passionate about this now.

Keep us updated Jackie and good luck!)

    Hi again ,

no updates as yet but a question. If I get no repairs done and just keep putting oil in, what happens. Might be cheaper

    It keeps burning it.

I must stop reading this thred. I have full audi history, but didnt buy from audi or a garage. It was a private trader. No chance he will ever cough up any money.

Not looking forward to the day i notice it.

Same as me rodders, 15k I paid too. Audi are gonna pay the parts and 30% labour but still leaves 2.5k bill at Xmas time.

ive actually just got an e mail off Audi uk asking me to contacting them regarding this issue, but I think it's just a very late reply to my original complaint. Ill ring them tomora.

Keep fighting. From reading i think anything under 2k is good. But yes very bad time of year for a bill like that.
Im a little annoyed with myself. I didnt research that much. I thought its an audi, nothing will go wrong. Oops....
Should habe gone for an older cheaper one. But love the B8

i think there will come a point when it has to be done. Over a period of 9 months from when I bought mine to having it repaired, my oil consumption went up from 1 litre every 500 miles to 1 every 220 miles. By that time, it was noticeably not as smooth revving as it should be, would hesitate on acceleration and the smoke was getting hard to ignore! Unfortunately it's not something that's going to get any better. I think you have to make a decision, either get it repaired or try and sell the car on

To be honest, I think you'll lose more than 2grand trading a car that cost 15k 6 months ago. Have the rebuild keep the receipts and sell it before the two year engine warranty runs out. That way your car will be worth 2k more than one that hasn't had the job done! Simples

Rudders, I bought mine from Independent and I have not paid a penny. The guy I bought the car from paid for the consumption test and crank/software etc (£600) and Audi have covered everything else. Update. Got the car back last week after having pistons etc replaced. Firstly so far no used any oil (350 miles in). So a good start, however it is now chucking out grey smoke on hard acceleration and my fuel economy is now beyond rubbish. Went to near London the other day, 200 miles all motorway, no hold ups and sticking at 70 ish, 26MPG (real not from the DIS). Around town I am in the high teens. I am told by Audi this is right as this engine is there worst for economy but I don't buy it, my 400bhp Forester STI did 22!

Biggest load of **** I've ever heard. Mines perfect now. 40mpg on mixed driving, and I have it boosting a lot. 1200 miles and no black/grey smoke and no oil consumption. As a test, stand behind the car and have some one floor it stood still. It will rev to 4000 and hold, before mind was done it would chuck out a huge black cloud when it hit the 4000rpm limiter. Now it's clean as a bell, and my exhaust tips are never dirty between washes. If I were you I'd monitor it over 1k miles and if it's still not right take it back and tell them that you're claiming on the warranty which covers the work that they did!

    Hi guys,

so audi uk rang yesterday cos my case had been passed to a manager, but no budging, still stands at 100% parts 30% labour which means £2400 to me. Been talking to a BMW tech friend Nd he says just keep putting oil in, if I keep it for 18month that'll be 2 year I've had it and it would cist less to just keep putting oil in....

Jackie, if you leave it so I believe you can cause the Cat to damage, as the oil consumption will effect emissions etc. also the same thing may happen tht happened to mine and carbon deposits may build up on your spark plugs over time causing it to misfire. Personally I'd get it done.

Well 500 miles in and no oil as yet, but fuel economy is still pretty bad. Did 200 miles today all motorway between 60 and 70, 24 mpg.....

What I don't get is there is no performance issues and if there was something wrong I think there would be other symptoms?

nope, just FWD unfortunately. But I wouldn't expect a drop like that just cause Quattro?

I don't know how it works, is it permanent 4WD?

Nope, there's more drag etc... through transmission, tyres.... but 20mpg loss is not right.

I get 30mpg+ just popping up to the shops, driving sensible.

I see you said Audi said this was a rubbish engine, but I was under the impression it was a good one for efficiency!?

They said to me that it is the worst engine cc for cc that they put in any Quattro car. How true that is I don't know... I can't help but think the conti tyres I have don't help and I am going to try some injector cleaner tomorrow...

I average 32-33mpg on my commute with an average speed of about 17mph. Last week I did a run of just over 100 miles and averaged just over 45mpg (accordion to the DIS). Mine seems to be averaging a little less since I had the repair, but that could easily be down to the colder weather as much as anything else

So there's a few mpg in it. Yes quoted figures are not real life, but its a good comparison to say that you shouldn't be getting the 20 mpg difference your are.

Surely its over fuelling for what ever reason?

In the end I ended up trading mine in for a brand new Seat Leon. It's quite a bit different to the A4 but it's alot cheaper to run and comes with a 3 year warranty. It's my wife that uses it most of the time anyway so it's ideal for her and its got some decent kit in it.

Audi wern't interested in my car using a litre of oil every 400 - 500 miles Because I didnt buy it from them and one of the services wasn't done by them. No goodwill would be offered at all and I couldn't afford the cost of a potentil rebuild so it left me no choice but to trade it in. It'sa shame because I really did like the car and with its modifications it was a quick car.
