Engine Oil For 8V RS3

0W-30 for me - far less viscous in the cold. A turbo saver for sure in the winter unless you want to drive like a milk float for the first 5 minutes.

Easiest way to stop any confusion is for you to supply the oil you want putting in your car.
I took my son's Golf 7 R in for a service at the local VW garage and asked for VW spec 504 oil to be used. When I saw the invoice I noticed that VW spec 502 has been used.
During the booking in process, I asked which brand of oil was used in their garage and the service receptionist said Honda!! I asked him to check and he came back saying Shell 504 spec which I would have been happy with.
I complained to the service manager who said they had used the correct oil for an annual service in spite of me asking for longlife.
He would not budge when I asked for it to be changed to what I asked for.
First thing when I got home was to order from ECP and change the oil myself.
The net result is that neither of our VW cars goes there for any work so the pedant lost our custom.
So last week my S3 8P at stage 2+ went to Audi with 5 litres of Millers Nanodrive in the boot. Our TT will go with Castrol Edge and so any concern is eliminated.

Many years ago, my Dad who was a very keen DIY mechanic told me "The best oil is the cheapest"
To start with, I could not understand this as he always bought Castrol which was expensive. When I asked him to explain, he completed the sentence fully.
"The best oil is the cheapest in the long run".
He never had any bearing type problems in his cars.
Exactly i always use the best oil i can. Even my 13 year old peugeot 307 xsi gets mobil 1 or castrol edge topups and decent stuff at the pug main dealer

I have been at this deal quite a while and while I would like to say that as long as one uses a quality synthetic motor oil that the rest is personal preference - part of the oil getting rated is to ensure at least a minimum standard for stability and performance. I will say that almost universally but one one that I used cough cough AMSOIL cough cough ( twice sadly ) and the engine in both cases did not make the next oil change. Possibly a coincidence but probably not.

That said I use Mobil 1 in everything I drive and have never had a problem even under the worst abuse.

Hey guys,

Just got quoted 4500 swedish "kronor" for an oil change at my dealer, thats roughly 400 quid... so now I'm looking at letting some non-audi garage do the deed, but in that case I want to bring in my own oil. So the question is what oil to go for? As I'm in cold-*** Sweden, should I be looking exclusively at 0W-30 (for cold weather functionality) or is there any other major downside going for that?
And brand-wise, is Castrol Edge the way to go, I think thats what the dealer claims to be using at least...

Please!
Help a brother out... :racer:

0W-30 for me - far less viscous in the cold. A turbo saver for sure in the winter unless you want to drive like a milk float for the first 5 minutes.

Me being in Sweden, should I even consider anything else? Whats the downside compared to, say 5W-40...??

there are other variables that would need to be addressed to answer your question, first and this is somewhat obvious but I assume that you are using a full synthetic oil with your reference to Castrol edge. This limits the variability to a great degree. do you park inside or outside and how oft. en will you start the car when it is cold soaked, will you run an engine pre-heat? what are your driving habits in the summer? The last question is applicable because I am on the belief that once you settle on an oil you stick as closely as possible to that for life ( more superstition than science there though) so track days on a lighter oil could create a viscosity issue.

with the quality of synthetics today you could run 0-30 in winter and 5-40 in summer, but I will not, I live in very similar climate to sweden and garage park 90% of the time and will run a synthetic 5w30 and watch closely on track days for temp and will contemplate going to a higher viscosity oil in the temps get to high.

My dealer supplied a top up bottle of 5W-40 Mobil Super 3000 Synthetic. I've not tried their parts department - but I've not yet found a supplier of Mobil.

I live in a hot country - I check the outside temp each day and I've noticed that the 'cold start' warning stopped coming on when it hit 24.5 DegC outside. It was 38 DecC this afternoon!

Theres no sticker in the engine bay to say the oil spec - my country manual says VW504.00, VW502.00 or VW508.00 and recommends Castrol Edge. I'm thinking I'll stick with the 5W-40, especially as it will be in the high 40s in the summer. I'll be monitoring the oil temperature as the summer comes!

Car was serviced last month (rs3 8v pfl) at audi glasgow using 0-30w

Thinking of buying a spare 1 litre for the boot
Castrol or Mobil 1 ?

Or just personal preference there

Also quick question does the 5 pot engine consume a lot of oil ? Sorry for the newbie question, only had the car less than 2 months now

Cheers

Just checked the oil level of my TTRS and was shocked to see it's below the minimum after 6000 miles. Was barely any mark on the dipstick! I wouldn't say it's particularly thrashed and I treat it with a fair degree of mechanical respect.

Definitely worth owners checking their oil regularly. I take back what I said @T-800

Lots of debate on here about what oil to use. Any preferences what make/quality I should use to top up my oil?

That’s exactly what was used in mines last week for its 20k service, All fluids and filters and plugs changed and purchased extended warranty from Audi.
Since I’ve been using it more now I can hear how loud it is with the the sports exhaust you guys go on about, it’s mental.33BA9DEC F4A4 4649 907C 003378A2CF1D72C74CF2 E168 4A8B AD01 15804B56B19850C4B5EA 9706 48FE 96E5 03F0E0322C23

Was that the first time you’ve done the haldex?
How dirty was the filter gauze? Mines only got 13k on but looking to do haldex at 15k as I did on my Golf R

Yea first haldex change, I was told the filter gauze wasn’t that bad. It’s recommended to be done at 20k so that’s why I left it till the bud.

It wasn't an Indie, it was the local VW garage.
Unsure about the exact specification but it was not what I asked for.
I also have a Golf GTI 1.8T bought new in 1998. I have always had fully synthetic long life oil installed and been happy to pay the difference if asked. It has been remapped for 35,000 miles and now at 107,000 miles it runs very sweetly with virtually no oil usage.

What p****s me off is that we all have an interest in our cars on here whereas it is rare to find someone who works at the main dealer with the same interest from my experience.
At my local Audi garage recently, I have had conversations with 2 people who work there. Both said words to the effect that they are not interested in cars and it is only a job!

Spot on comment.
Audi may be a top brand but in general the main dealers employ people who are just not interested.
As for management they walk the talk but never deliver, only interested in having an easy life everyday, never really go near real genuine Audi customers either.

Guys, check oil light came on this morning, Have bought a litre of oil for it - how much do you need to put in when it gets to this point? Some people are saying the full litre?

Until it reaches max mark on dipstick
Aye it takes a while to come through though doesn't it? Don't want to overfill it - assumed that when the light came on it would require a certain amount

Start with half a litre. Check it again tomorrow.

Out of interest, how many miles has yours done? I had no warning light but when I checked mine at 7000 miles I was below the minimum. I put in half a litre and then another half a month later. It does seem to like a drop.

As with everything a bit of marketing going on , even fully synthetic isn't fully synthetic cause group 3 oil basestock is a severely hydrocracked mineral oil .

With anything saying its Ester based which is top group 5 it certainly won't be just group 5 but a combination of 4 and 5 or 3, 4 and 5 and the percentage of 5 is usually 10 - 20 % .

I think 3 , 4 and 5 is better as it combines the different qualities of each group .

Which is interesting as a piece albeit a single piece of evidence from a German lab says 504.00 507.00 is 3 , 4 and 5 .

I wonder what percentage the Ester is !

I don't think all 504.00 507.00 are 3 , 4 and 5 and I don't know what brand was tested , VW's own Quantum ?

You certainly know your group base oils. Fancy a job peddling the stuff?

You’re right about the synthetic Ester based products. They do lubricate the engines better for prolonged periods of time. That’s why they’re generally used in racing.

TPS’s quantum brand used to be Castrol however since earlier in the years they’re filled by the German brand Fuchs. Who are factory fill for a lot of OEM’s. Including Mercedes.

If you’re london based I have access to the Q8, Castrol, Mobil and Fuchs range of PCMO car oils. All “Formally approved” to 504-507. I’m not on here to sell oil but if anyone is desperately keen on saving money I can supply them it in 20litres drums - Bulk. Just DM me. London and the surrounding counties only. If you’re looking for smaller quantities then google Opie oils. They deliver 5litre drums nationwide and have good technical back up. And an extensive range of formally approved brands. There’s a lot of crap brands out there that “meet the requirements” of 504-507. At the end of the day unless they have a formal approval certificate to say it’s been put on a rig and tested to meet the spec it’s not approved.

I’ve only just got my RS3 so I’m not even sure what oil I will be using. Probably the Q8 brand as I know the base oils are of consistent quality and so are the additive packages used. It’s essentially like baking a cake, you wouldn’t make a nice Victoria sponge and use dog sh*t flower with bad consistency would you.

Having a debate with a friend who says I should get my car serviced by an independent and that it won't affect resale. I appreciate you don't lose your warranty these days by going independent, but personally when I'm buying a car I want to see that it has a full main dealer service history.

Thoughts anyone?

Personally I’d prefer to support independent VAG specialists. They value your businesss, are generally ex main dealer employees who have branched out and started their own business. Also you’re putting money back into the local economy and community. Not a massive corporation. Just my opinion mind. I’ve had bad experiences at both main dealers and independent garages. Just my opinion.

Had the oil check light flash up on mine last week on the way to the airport for our holiday... wasn’t far from the carpark so carried on the left it for a week while we were away... got back and checked the dipstick and only very minimal amount of oil registering in it... topped up with the 1 litre bottle supplied by Audi in the boot

It was the same as you’ve used Doc, just got myself some more from Euro Car Parts :icon thumright:

Sorry I forgot to but it in... just shy of 5,000 mate, was a bit of a shock when it flashed up but having read a bit more it seems common which is better to know

Yes!

Have you checked all the side compartments in the boot and under the boot tray?

Yes!

@D0C worth a complaint to the dealer or are they not obliged to provide?

And yessir I've checked everywhere

My car has been serviced by Audi and on the service sheet they say they used “Mobil Super 3000 F-V” oil.

The car previously had Shell Helix Ultra and I also always used that when topping up. My questions are:

1. How do Mobil oil generally compare to Shell Helix Ultra, i.e. is it at least as good, better or worse.

2. I have spare Shell oil. Can I still use this to top up, or is it best to buy some Mobil?

Mobil Super 3000 Formula V looks like a spin on Mobil 1 ESP Formula as both are also C2 and VW 504.00 507.00 .

Can’t comment on the quality compared to each other... but no problem at all using what you’ve got as a top up still :icon thumright:

I Had a mk3 TT that was purchased brand new and used 5/30 oil. The oil consumption was absolutely horrendous. Then I bought in 2017 a new S3 that used 0/30 oil and never used any oil. Now I have just collected a new RS3 that has a top up of 0/30 in the back as for oil consumption I cannot comment as it’s only covered 200 miles, happy days.

Just wanted to check, I've been buying Castrol Edge Professional 5w 30, as that was what was recommended when I put my reg no into the Castrol website. What's the difference between that and 0w 30? And am I ok with using 5w 30 instead?

0w30 is used to help with cold start emissions and fuel economy.

5w30 is perfectly fine so long as it meets the Audi specs.

That's great, thank you. Yes it's the Audi specific one.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think Audi discontinued producing 5W-30 OEM oil, and the new OEM successor is 0W-30.

Nope still 5w-30. Castrol edge or similar.

Some recommend 5w-40 but I tend to stick with the OEM spec oil.

Castrol Edge is Castrol brand, not Audi/Seat/Volkswagen/Skoda OEM, I didn't say that 5W30 oil is being discontinued world wide any more, I said that Audi discontinued to make it, or to be more exact, Audi discontinued to produce oil part number: G052195M4 (5W-30 504.00-507.00), and it's successor is now: GS55545M4EUR (0W-30 504.00/507.00), and it's backwards compatible to 5W-30.
