Hi all,

My 2001 AMK S3 is playing silly buggers with me and I have a long list of jobs to get sorted.

Top of the list is an engine management light that's displaying - 2 previous diagnostics have shown 1 being an intermittant missfire & 1 as running lean.

Now, the other problem is the fact that my cooler temp is showing 80c-85c when driving on open roads to work 40/50/60mph but then when slower through towns and idling it rises to 90c. Thought it was the cold weather but the previous 4 years of ownershsip cold weather has never affected it and it's always hit 90c everyday constantly. Is is possible that the 2 are linked somehow?

I am booked in this friday with Midlands VW for a more in depth diagnosis with the guys there to pin point exactly what's going on, but any ideas what to possibly expect?

Thermostat, MAF sensor, vacum hose?

Cheers for any help, need to get the car sorted ready for an M.O.T end of Feb.

Change the coolant temp sensor, green, 4 pin sensor on the gearbox end of the head, costs about £20, this sensor controls more than just the gauge, and could well be your issue with running lean, id also say change your thermostat at the same time, that will cure your temp gauge movement :)

Cheers Phil, hopefully fingers crossed a relatively cheap fix to my problem then.

Seems alot of temp/stat problems of late!

My gauge was doing silly things on the odd time id look down and see the gauge going from 90 down to like 70 then go back up, so on monday i replaced my sensor (we keep them in stock) and i must say it seems to run better, so it was more than just the gauge being messed around, for the amount it cost i dont know why i didnt change mine when i was putting all the new bits on :(

Oh well car will be handed over to a VAG specialist tomorrow to have a leaking power steering coolant pipe replaced and the EML light and temp problem diagnosed.

Hopefully know the problem tomorrow and can act on it.

My temp gauge has gone weird too! When i put my heaters on it drops from 90 to about 60, turn heaters off and it goes back to 90 but takes about 10 mins to get back upto 90.

Thermostat or temp sender?

Cheers.

Stat.....

Problem solved!

Split vacuum pipe under the inlet manifold was causing an air leak which was why she was running lean.

Thermostat needs replacing too.

Had the split repaired today, stat is getting done in the week.

Driving home felt like a new car, over the last few weeks I was convincing myself it was driving the same as ever, how wrong was I!
