EGR vavle needed?

HI new to ya great site....can someone tell me if egr needed?Reason i ask is cos after many hours of trying to solve the prob of my 80 tdi smoking loads on part load i disc egr(plugged pipe)and now cured. I know its 4 emmisions but does it mess up ECU set up etc?car still drives perfect

When I disconnected the EGR pipe on my TDI it threw up a engine management light.

Thanks for comment,been on tdiclub.com and found out minds ok to disconnect cos its the early"open loop"system(1995 Z1)
