i've been reading some posts about DVs by the S3 boys.
It appears they get some good resaults from upgrading their DV.
I know theirs is a petrol and mine is a diesel but both are turbos and the basic idea is still the same.

Would buying a upraded DV for a S3 fit and emprove any thing on my 1.9 TDI?

I dont think the tdi's have DV's and it wouldn't fit unless you modded your pipework you would have to buy a DV and fitting kit and it won't really do anything performance wise just give you the tsssssstt noise lol

They're not the same, because the petrol has a throttle plate, and the derv does not!

The DV is there to stop the boost pressure "backing up" between the closed throttle and the turbo upon lifting off. Because diesels dont have a throttle plate, no air backs up and the engine doesnt have nor require a DV.

You'd need one of those electronic ones mate, your DERV can't run a DV. The boost just disappears on diesels I am led to believe.

DV = Dump Valve OR Diverter Valve... whichever you want to call it.

    Oil burners don't need DV's.

Basically a diverter valve diverts charged air in the pipework back to the intake pipe a dump valve most commonly does it to atmosphere but you can call a diverter valve a dump valve because in a sense it's doing the same job of getting rid of the charged air in the pipework. If you run a cone filter instead of the standard airbox you get the ttssssssttt noise lol

They are the same thing but different names?
    Ok.

But diesels have a turbo and use air, the same as petrol turbos, so surly it could use one?
What would happen if I fitted one?

christ how much absolute **** is in this thread? I've just dumped it all into the thread bin.

    Scott, read my first reply.

Your diesel doesnt have a throttle plate. Diesels govern power output solely by controlling the amount of fuel injected. As a result when you lift off, the boost doesnt build up and require dumped like it does on a petrol, it just passes thru the engine.

O.k, the dump valve one was a joke, albeit not very funny.. But my last response was true as far as I am aware, so why was it put into the bin? The DV is what makes the tssst noise, and the cone filter gives it the induction roar, as it is an induction kit.
