DTC reading from climate panel?

This might be bonkers; but I have a vague feeling that I'd read somewhere that there was a degree of diagnostics visibility through the climate control panel- is that fiction?

Replaced the gasket seal on my ARY cam cover last night and now have the dreaded yellow CHECK ENGINE lamp. Just about to drive 200 miles this afternoon and wondered if someone could point me at the shortcut to this thread, if they know where it is...?

I will (hopefully) have access to the whole VAG-COM setup in a few days, but wondered how much damage I'll be doing in the meantime...
