The number at the end of PRNDS is the gear you're in!

My DSG shows what gear I'm in... in D, S and manual mode.

Are you saying that when in D or S mode your DIS doesn't display what gear you're in at all?? You sure?? Doesn't sound right to me.

When I'm in d or s I have no gear shown on the dis after PRNDS(no number) when I'm in manual it shows 123456.

Dunno then, mine's a 2006 and definitely displays the gear. Maybe its the earliest DIS that don't have it. If so, its pretty ridiculous that they didn't think it was necessary to show the driver what gear they are in, even in auto mode. Guess they realised their mistake and added it to newer cars.
