DSG agro...

    Hi,

    I’ve just had my 2005 A3 S-Line TDI dsg serviced (60k) at wayside Milton Keynes.
    I mentioned to them that I had noticed a squeaking noise on start up, which they diagnosed as the flywheel and a cost to replace of £1100+vat!!

    They also mentioned a slight whining noise on pull away, which they believe to be the flywheel but they can’t guarantee this, the car full Audi service, gearbox oil changed ect.
    The cars out of warranty, so I’m pooing my pants but surely I shouldn’t be having this agro at 60k?

    Anyone been though the same pain?

    If it were me I would get a second opinion from someone who isn't Audi. From my experience a VAG dealer will always tell you you need £1,000,000's worth of work doing when in fact its totally pointless. This is the main reason I will never take my car to be serviced at an Audi garage. Rarely do you get a well qualified mechanic working on your car its usually just a monkey who has done the VW training and can operate the computer. Speaking of that I would also get a VAG COM scan of the car to check for faults.

    Just my 2p.

    As the skin thing goes you could just highlight the OP's text to see what he had written.

    You could always get a second opinion from another Audi dealer. If you took your car to Wayside you cannot be too far away from Bedford. You could try Bedford Audi who are just off the A421 Bedford by-pass on the A6 heading into Bedford. When I worked in Bedford several of my colleagues used them and always spoke highly of them. If the problems are serious and the car has only done 60k and has been serviced regularly they may be prepared to contact Audi to see if any goodwill claim is possible. Something only an Audi dealer can do!

    I use Huntingdon Audi who are also part of the same Vindis Group and have always found them to be excellent, both when buying a new car and for regular maintenance. It is a family business still run by the two sons of the man who started the business. I'm on my 7th A3 and they have all been purchased through Huntingdon Audi.

    I must admit the audi 'tech' didn't fill me with confidence, He was implying 'bring it in for the flywheel and we can have a go at diagnosing the whining noise while the gearbox is out saving you five hours labour in the future'

    My worry is they pull the box out and and cane me for £1000's

    I've got Vagtech and Total vag quite close to me but these seem to be tuning specialist?

    Are there any DSG specialist about?

    I've heard good reports about Bedford Audi, the previous owner swore by them, even Wayside told me I may get cheaper quotes for work at Bedford as wayside charge 'London rates'????

    If you do decide to go to Bedford Audi, specifically ask if their Master Technician could have a look at it with you.

    Alternatively try Huntingon Audi, who have two Master Techicians both of whom I have spoken to in the past and both seem very knowledable. They are David Collumbassi and David Hookham. Huntingdon are also appointed as one of the few R8 dealers.

    I thought my DSG was starting to whine and got that sinking 3k bill feeling too!

    By concidence I changed the tyres and it was them whining not the box! :)

    I've had a pair of rear tyres that make strange whining noises on some road surfaces. At first I wondered if it might be a wheel bearing. I took my car into Huntingdon Audi and one of their technicians came out with me. He listened and said it sounded like a tyre problem. Took it back and onto a ramp in the workshop and confirmed it was due to the way the rear tyres had worn.

    The whine on my A3 stops after intial pull away as if it's a clutch related. I've had the tyre noise on my last car, this dosn't sound anything like the tyres.
    I'm definately taking up to Bedford Audi as recommended by Dave R to get a second opinion.
    I rang Wayside in MK to see if they could improve on the cost of the flywheel and they're telling me the £1100 is a 'good will quote' as the car has FASH. they recon they've nocked around £200 off.
    I'm just itchin to get it up to bedford...

    Update;
    Ok, went up to Bedford Audi, took 'Andy' the're master technician out in my A3 (good to talk to someone who actualy knows what there on about) within 100m he diagnosed a noisey input shaft in the gearbox! no question about it, I't the first one he'd known off, in the dsg.
    They tell me, Audi do not repair the dsg gearboxes as they are sealed?
    They gave me a straight quote to replace the box @£3750!

    Andy went off and put the cars deatils in at Audi UK for a 'good will' discount and it came back as none! the computerised system does not give a reason, the service rep mentioned its proberbly as the cars five years old.
    Bedford Audi can offer a good will discount but they will not apply it until the gearbox is out,I would have to pay five hours labour @ £93 per hr, they recon discount could be around 10% of the full cost of the reapair.
    Totaly gutted....

    So what are my options?
    1-Chop the car in
    2-Try to find someone who will repair the box
    3-Take a chance on a second hand unit
    4-Live with it , (which is difficult for me as I'm an engineer) and cross my fingers,
    5-Tell the kids Christmas is cancelled for the next few years!

    Any other options?

    I'd get an independent specialist to look at it, preferably someone with a lot of knowledge on DSGs. That way you can tell you if

    1. The diagnosis is correct
    2. The gearbox can be repaired
    3. Whether you can give them a 2nd hand unit to fit
    4. A more realistic cost

    Now I've got my head straight, I've arranged to take it to an auto gearbox specialist near me for another diagnose and I've also got a quote from Warranty direct after reading on a R32 site that someone had a flywheel and dsg gearbox replaced.
    The warranty quote came out at £499 for thirteen months, you have to pay 10% of the part cost and they claim to cover full wear and tear on all shafts/bearings in the gearbox/transmission.
    I will read the small print and look at the review sites and consider the option.

    Something doesn't sit right here. The car is 5 years old and done 60k miles? That is no where near the end of it's life and the gearbox should be in servicable condition. I would attempt to get hold of Audi and ask them if they think the cost's you are likely to incur are reasonable?

    As for the warranty thing - it's an option but one I would hold off on at the moment. You may come unstuck putting in a big claim within a month of two of starting the plan. It wouldn't be that hard for them to track down you knew about the fault before taking out the policy. I would imagine that warranties operate in similar ways to health plans. If you don't declare something that you should and they find out the policies are usually null and void.

    Have you owned the car from new?

    I've Owned the car for around 15 months now, when I first started looking at getting the flywheel sorted after getting no joy from wayside Audi, I rang Audi UK who told me that as the car was not purchaced 'within the group' and they cannot offer me the same amount of 'goodwill' to reapair. I explained to them that main dealers rarely have 2005 cars with the spec I was after satnav/bose ect, although it has Audi fsh.
    I totally agree 60k on a gearbox is rediculus, It just shouldn't happen on a car of this age/milage, I will be definately calling them in the morning, as you rightly mention on the warranty, that's the small print I'll be reading...........

    Warranty direct did me 13 months for £380 on quattro with Turbo cover.

    You should be aware that the "Wear and Tear" cover doesn't kick in for 90 days on a new warranty (I.e. If you are not renewing an existing one).

    +1. i'd call trading standards too, because as kaedo rightly points out a car with that age and mileage absolutely should not need a new gearbox

    Ok result from the Audi investigation....err, that will be nothing then, Bedford audi tell me 10% 'goodwill' is better nothing and Audi UK is just a joke,
    They tell me....
    1/They can't apply any more goodwill as I havn't registered my car with Audi?? although it had a full service in Sept and a cam belt change two weeks ago, I should of taken my V5 doc to a main dealer to register it, news to me, oh and by the way it can't be done retrospectively after a claim
    2/Regarding the input shaft wear, They say that "Its quite acceptable for parts to start to deteriorate on a five year old vehicle, regardless of mileage and service history" This is a component that sits in very expensive oil for all of it's life, a component they are quite happy to charge people to maintain....but if it fails....tough
    I calmly argued the case for fifteen minutes, telling them the gearbox was not fit for purpose ect and then the customer service rep went into a well rehearsed speach going around in circles,repeating the same excuses, a complete waste of time.
    I'm fuming........

    hello maybe someone can help me on this topic also i have a 55 reg a3 DSG sline and every blue moon i will drive and at slow speeds say bout 20mph my car will just drive as it is in 1st gear in the auto box and in my DIS it flashes "DRNPS" with a big red box aroudn those letters... then i turn my car off and start it back up and it is perfect again for ages? what is this fault please ? thanks anthony .
