Driving on low gearbox oil

So turns out I've been driving around with only 1.2l of oil in my gearbox and transfer box, is it likely this will have caused any damage?
The oil was dark but didn't have excessive metal in it or anything and the magnetic plug wasn't anymore bunged up than would be expected, oils never been changed in 103k as far as I'm aware...

Anywho looks like the cause is a leaking flange on the nearside of the transfer box, I imagine it's a difficult job to replace it??
 
dont think it would have damaged anythink as if i remember they only hold about 1.9 litres anyway
 
My A3's a quattro and it holds 2.6l, I don't know if the 1.9 you're thinking of is for a FWD A3?
