Two of the areas in which driverless car trials are about to start contain motorists who are seemingly not keen on the idea.

Coventry in the West Midlands and Bristol are two of the four areas chosen for the trials but only 20% of drivers aged 40 or more in the West Midlands and in south west England would consider using a driverless car, a survey by insurance company Rias found.

Of regions in Britain, only north east England had motorists less keen on the new concept.

The trials for driverless cars, which will be starting soon, are also being carried out in Greenwich in south London and in Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire.

Based on responses from 750 drivers aged 40 or more, the survey showed that 29% would c onsider using a driverless car.

For the north west England and East Midlands regions, this figure goes up to 43%, but is as low as 15% among motorists in the North East,.

In the 60-69 age range, 32% were keen to have a go.

Rias managing director Peter Corfield said: 'We live in an ever-changing world and it is absolutely incredible to think that we could be driving around in driverless cars in the next few years.

"It's fantastic to see that older drivers are embracing this idea and are actually considering the prospect of using a driverless car if they are deemed safe."

so if they do bring in driverless cars
can we get drunk and let them take us home ?

Would imagine so, never thought of that but it's a good reason to have one.

but wouldn't it be drunk in charge.

Only in charge of is asking it to take you somewhere though same as a taxi.

I think its a good idea, especially if you can have a drink or three and still get home:)

Here's an idea: buy a 100 quid banger. Remove reverse lights. Find the driverless cars. Reverse into it as it slows for a junction. Take the company to court. Get a petition to stop the idiocy. While you're in court tell them v8s are environmentally friendly and reduce petrol prices to 50p per gallon. Enjoy driving life again.
