Does your cruise control turn itself off?

My Does. There are various scenarios but basically I can be quietly cruising and the damn thing turns itself off.

Anyone heard of this problem?

Yep. Mine did it on my previous A4. Turned out to be a faulty microswitch on the clutch pedal. It took them ages to identify it cos it was so intermittant.

I was just going to suggest faulty brake or clutch switch. Most likely to be the clutch switch, as it doesn't bring up a fault. New one is around a tenner and not too difficult to fit.
