Does the A3 1.8t agu have an oil level sensor?

So over the weekend I replaced oil pickup. I sealed sump and rebuilt. Filled with new oil 3.5L.
I have been running the car and it appears there are no issues, however I have just moved the car at lunch and it looks like there is oil all over the floor where I was parked. I checked oil level with the dipstick and that showed no oil. I did change the housing for the dip stick at the same time, so it could be a case of the housing not sitting far enough down..

My question is, is there any kind of sensor that would tell me if the oil was low, other than the dipstick?
The engine sounds fine and I get the OK when starting the car and no alarms while driving.

It's not an S3 so it doesn't have the sensor under the sump, what ever that does..

    Cheers,

No mate... no sump sensor on AGU... dipstick and low oil pressure warning is all you have...

Sensor on the S3's (and others) does oil temp, oil level and I believe oil quality for use fro AVS service scheduling...

Damn, so what would you suggest to fault find? Would the car not make an awful noise if low on oil, or would the pressure not drop?

Think about it... oil on the floor and non on the dipstick...

If you have had the sump off to do the pickup then my money is on the gasket for the oil return pipe where it bolts onto the sump... assuming you have used the correct sump sealant and re-used the gasket... ideally you should replace all gaskets when doing this kind of work

    Gasket, what gasket?

To re-seal the sump I used the stuff from Audi. Cost around £17 inc vat.
The oil return didn't have a gasket on either, however I did use some sealant on that, too.

I will have a look when I finish and try and find where it's leaking from.. I very much hope I don't have to remove the sump again.. that was a ballache to get back on. (the three screws next to transmission)

Maybe you didn't sealed the sump properly, but why only 3.5L ? It should be 4.4L

According to the 'Mobil' chart, it says the 1.8t 96' - '02 takes 3.5? Is 4.4 correct?

Some agu's do have level sensors. If there's a sensor in the sump it's got it, if it hasn't it doesn't. Lol

Yeah it definitely doesn't have the sensor at the bottom of the sump..

hope this isn't a silly question, but did you check the oil level after refilling mate? was it up to full then?

Oil drain from the turbo is a very likely cause, especially as it wasn't gasket'd before.. Very unlikely for you to have lost all the oil through a sealant issue with the sump / block join, because all the oil sits down in the sump, so wouldn't leak out of that joint anyway expect a bit when running.

I doubt you'll have to take the sump off again, but if it's the oil drain, you'll have to drain the oil again to get it clean and dry to re-seal!

Is this the return oil pipe?

Yes I checked the oil and it seemed fine, which is why I kinda know that the housing is sat correct. I probably only left it a few minutes from filling it back up again though..

Yes, drain, return, it's the only connection onto your sump, so you can't miss it :)

Ok Thanks, I know the pipe you mean, but didn't know that came direct from the turbo..

I'll have a look at break time to see if I can see where the leak is coming from..

Yes, Bentley say 4.4L. Anyway, best way to fill is checking the dipstick, but 0.9L it's a big difference, i have no idea where did Mobil got that from.

OK, that could be the reason nothing is showing on my dipstick now it's come to settle...
I'll pop some more in tonight when I get home and hope for the best. I looked under the car again and over 2 hours nothing has come out. Could it have been that the engine was warm so it leaked?

    Thanks
