Ditch or pay the £ and keep it cant decide

    I have an 02 1.8T, just hit 57k miles I only do about 3-4k miles a year these days, most of the week the car sits on the drive. The car now needs a cambelt/water pump replacement, discs and pads alround, new CV joint and a few other bits, can't do the work myself and in total is a bout £780 worth of work all in and thats with parts from me and London rates. The car can't be worth more than £2.5k if that in its current state, I just cannot decide whether to get the work done or ditch the car and get something newer, my worry is that if I fork out for the work needed now I could also end up with alot of other expensive fixes needed soon just due to age of car, like a a new clutch (how long they live in a3?) , and then I read about needing to have the oil feeder sorted etc, also Ive got the rusting on the roof.

    So if you were me would you keep the car and get the work done on it, or sell the car and buy something for £5k ?

    I would fix and keep personally. Depends on how much you like the car and also spending 5k on another car doesn't guarantee that you won't have to pay money out in the near future as things could still go wrong with a newer car.

    keep it like they say you could buy a £5 car and it could have just as many problems if not more, if i were you I would spend the £780 odd to fix it and then spend the last like £1500 on a track car :)

    Yeah £780 not to much its around £920 with the service I just had done as well.

    I swaying to keeping it now, may be just get the cambelt and MOT critical stuff done ... just parnoid about others things going on it as my A3 seems to have had nearly all the common faults :)

    I do like the car its only 57k miles well spec'd leather, heated etc interior is perfect as in the 8 years I've had it 99% time its just been me in it, the exterior however has a few battle scares but thats expected in London.

    Depending how worn your brakes are,you may need to so them too before the mot.I'd keep it personally.its not a everyday car but good to know you van use it whenever needed

    Question is is what or how much more car would you get for £5 in terms if performance, economy etc etc.

    Given the low miles you do each year buying a newer car to just sit on the drive most of the time depreciating seems daft, I'd get the A3 work done and run it long term as that should be the lowest overall cost option of the two and its a car you know so shouldn't be any hidden nasties

    It doesnt matter how much a car is worth when relating to servicing and maintenance costs. These things have to be paid for with any car.
    Personally if you like and enjoy the car get the work done.

    yeah i would say keep it and save that extra money, atleast you know what you have under that bonnet mate... or you could always part with an S3 :p

    if there was a running £5 car out there id swap but if its a £5k!!!! car (lol forgot the k in the earlier post) but no keep the car you had it a long time you know whats going on with it. if your bored of it maybe its time to start upgrading parts get a map possibly k04 conversion if you can afford. Im just doing that now :)
