Not an easy question to answer I'm sure (motorway and town miles considered) but when roughly should I replace brake discs? They do have an edge to them, my car has covered 54k and has had a mixture of town and motorway driving. Also, can I just replace my current discs with black diamond or do I have to change the callipers?

I did 40K on OE disc and pads b4 upgrading to Combi discs and pads (see signature).

Discs still had life in them when I took them off...
BDs are much better - no fade whatsoever.

Straight swaps with OE items, had to rewire the pad wear indicator (2min job). Calliers will be fine.

I'm up to 46k on my original disks. My car is mainly for the weekends and gets driven hard. I've been through a few sets of pads, but the disks are only just coming to the end of their life.

Hell! My first set of standard discs lasted under 10000 miles...they were destroyed!

I hope some of them were track miles or an attempt to give cause to upgrade them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/goofy.gif

Just out of curiosity, how long did tyres last? - I'm guessing not long at all!

    8-10,000 miles a set...rotating them.

And running aggressive suspension angles with lots of negative camber.

Hotscar, you replace discs if they become thinner than the factory stated width, become cracked, damaged or warped.

If you have no braking wobbles or issues and they are withing width tollerances you don't need to replace them.

I can check the minimum spec if you like?

Ok, thanks for your help. There doesn't seem to be any problems and at my last service they didn't mention anything on the 'advisory sheet'. If I'm going to be honest, I'm just thinking ahead for when I do need to replace them and what to put on. I'm not into lots of modifications (if any) but if I can get some better discs (standard have faded on me a few times) without having to put different calliper etc on when they're due, then I probably will.

Thanks for ya help guys...interesting reading and I can't believe someone can go through discs in 10k...

I'm sure you provided Mr. Ess_Three with a sporty motor a free access to a track he could kill a set in a weekend! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
