At the moment, this is probably quite true

    in 6 months, not so

there'll be hundreds out there, you'll be able to pick and choose, after all is said and done its just a mass produced Audi

Ok, about 8 weeks ago, my local AUDI garage had 2 S3s, both Black, both had optic pack, fbmfsw and buckets, one had NAv the other didnt. Both were 3 months old with around 1K miles.

One car was £29995, the other £28995, so therefore 2K and 3K above basic book price respectively.

Are we saying that that AUDI dealer never acheived these prices ? and they dont understand vehicle pricing?

Trust me, have a look on the Autotrader and search for S3s OVER 27K, which base price.
Ive just checked and there are 20, from a total of 57 Natiowide. So basically more than a 3rd of all used S3 in the country are for sale at above basic `new` book price.
You simply cant ignore this, desirable extras on 8P S3s command a premium in the second hand market, fact.

I agree a used Mondeo for example will probably not achieve much over book price with a few factory trinkets but S3 absolutely do not follow this trend.
Much to my dismay when I came to buy one!

    Cheers
    Paul

Maybe, but without a call to mystic Meg ball we would be guessing, however when I started searching for an S3 last Nov 07 they were never more than 60 or so used cars for sale natiowide, Ive just checked 5 mins ago and there are 57.
Its would appear that there is still the steady supply/demand balance there was 6 months ago but whether that trend changes dramatically as soon as the next as 6 months time, Im not sure.

Although 12 months time once the face lift has started to populate our roads?
    lets see.

    cheers

Unfortunately the people I usually end up waiting for are not quite as punctual as I am.

Without wanting to offend anybody, I think some of the comments about installing a TV tuner into a car are a tad unwarranted. If I had opted for the factory RNS-e and factory TV tuner for about 4 grand would the comments be the same? As it stands I've paid out about a grand to fit this kit aftermarket.

I've seen some mods recently which I thought were a total waste of money, however I didn't post any comments as I figure the people who performed those mods thought they were worthwhile.

As for those of you making references to health and safety, etc., etc. - how many of you regularly drive over the speed limit, smoke while driving, hold a mobile to your ear, speed up at an amber light, crane your necks while driving in town to check out some girl's (or boy's) bits, overtake a slow moving car on a continuous white line, drive after having a few beers......

Having a TV installed in your car is nowhere near as dangerous as any of the above? Having it on while driving is, but I don't understand the comments being made from what I thought were fairly level headed members of the forum.

Again, no offence intended by the above comments - just expressing my own opinion on the topic.

Personally I have nothing against people having a tv installed in their car if that's how they want to spend their money - providing it automatically turns OFF whenever the car is moving.

Getting back to the options on a second-hand car, while it obviously makes it easier to sell, I believe it does add some value to the car.

Before the Sportback, I had a Focus ST170 from new. I wanted a five door in grey with two option packs which gave you things like leather, heated Recaros, climate, xenons, upgraded sound system, hot screen and loads of other bits. While at one dealer, they offered me their fully-loaded (every factory option bar ESP) 3dr silver showroom model for the same price, which I went for.

When I came to sell, my buyer was extremely specific in the car he wanted. It had to be an ST170, it had to be fully loaded and so I got the full asking price with no haggling. Consider in addition that most people will always stretch to buy the best they can afford, and that can mean skipping the run of the mill standard models - which I always do - to locate something with more kit.

Options will add a price to a used car , how much who knows ive not looked!

If you are a dealer/trader and you have two S3's both the same age, miles , colour , but one has buckets, sat nav, and FBMFSW , while the other one has none of the above the "fancy" S3 will sell for more money than the Std S3. Fact!

I would guess at £1500 more!

Lol, cant even believe this is being debated.

Well actually I can having thought about it when typing this acticle - I was going to say...

"Any car with options will sell for more, but equally the value of those options will depreciate with age and according to market forces"

    However, scenario....

Normally you'd expect a car with a 1.8 engine to be worth less than a 2.0. But, with tax and fuel costs ever increasing the 1.8 engine could be worth more in the near future...

I guess the answer is that something is only worth what someone is willing to pay, and is dictated by supply and demand. On the whole I think options will increase the value, but this is not always the case

No need to thank me :icon_thumright:

i did not fit a tv tuner to increase its resale value
i dont think anyone gets any factory / aftermarket options to increase their resale value either; its just because the buyer *wants it*. if its not your cup of tea, don't get the option/mod yourself and don't buy a second hand car with that option/mod.

Would agree with that, its just useful to get some of the money back however much it may be, but it shouldnt be your reason for doing the mod/retrofit in the first place.

I think its fair to say that a OEM retrofit would be a much more desirable `extra`to a prospective buyer come resale time, as opposed to an `aftermarket addition`.

Thats ok just turn up after the agreed time, if they are always 15 minutes late you turn up 15 minutes late, adjust to suit the individual. :) (I'm on messing by the way, I used to fill my cars with thousands of pounds worth of stereo for no apparent reason apart from scaring the wild life as I drove)

For all of those talking about audi dealers have different spec'd cars at different prices. What do you think they paid for them when the owners part ex'd them? Did they get a couple of grand extra on the trade in price? I doubt it.

Maybe maybe not , but they will still sell the better spec'd car for more money! so in that respect it's worth more money!

Extras are worth nothing to dealers when selling to them but buying from them is different.
I would always pay extra for certain items, then again I have never purchased a base car in my life

    Absolutely.

Like I said in one of my previous posts, over 30% of ALL used S3s in the country (according to Autotrader website) are advertised at MORE than 27K, which is the base price for a new car.
They carry premiums because of their relatively high spec versus basic spec.
    Fact, not opinion.

Yup, understood the sarcasm there. Unfortunately if I show up late to compensate, and then they decide to be early (i.e. on time) they then moan about my being late. You can't win with some people!!

See this post on using a Nokia N95 as an auxillary video input on the Tuner and using the DivX\Real Player on the phone to watch video on the RNS-e screen. Since I always have the phone with me, if I'm stuck waiting on somebody and there's nothing on telly (or reception is poor) I can just hook the phone up. With the PSP you may not always have it with you when you need it.

BUT I can use the same videos I have for my PSP on my K800i. I just need to clear out some space on it!

That's true. I think I may need to convert the video for the N95 to make it play. 8GB of storage though, so there's loads of room on it.

But wait another 6 months when they are not in such short supply and it will be a different story.

Using your example I couild say that I could keep a car and sell it 6 months later for a premium over list. Well I could if that car was an aston or a fezza.

Dont worry if I turn up late my friends just think that the next time I am driving I will be 15minutes late and then they will be another 15minutes so infactthey have an additional half hour... Double edge sword!!!!!!

    Eh?
My post was to highlight that extras do in fact carry a premium, nothing more. You will never make money speculating on an S3.
Cant remember making references to prestiges brands with 12month + plus waiting lists.
You will never buy a base spec S3 for 27K and sell it for more at a later date. The cars advertised at over 27K have option galore.

    Did I miss something?

    Cheers
