What is the difference between a 'D' and an 'H' model of the RNS-E? Is it just firmware? If so, a sat nav from a 2003 car will be the same as one from a 2007 car if I buy the latest firmware DVD?

I think the only differences are.

SDS is enabled on latest models by default. although you can now enable SDS via a simple software update.

Latest units are also supposed to be quicker at reading the SD Cards.

Think thats about it really. If you take an older unit and update the firmware to the latest version then it should work identically to a new unit.
Obviously you have to take into account that an old unit is exactly that, old. If it has been heavily used it may be showing signs of wear and the DVD drive may be worn.

The unit I installed is a version 'D' and it's fine.

    Good luck with your install.

I don't think SDS is enabled by default, Audi supply two different current models. One with SDS "R" and one without "Q".

The "H" model should have SDS enabled.
